What happened with that alert thing?

As the title says really.

Did I miss anything saying it was discontinued or something? I remember having the test thing go off on my phone then never heard another thing about it?

With the bad weather this winter and weather warnings what felt like daily how did we never get any of them or am I remembering incorrectly and it wasn't about weather ?

We were in a cafe when it was tested and only about half the customers' phones went off, perhaps they had to abandon it as it didn't work for everyone?

I thought it wasn't intended to be used frequently, more for "This area is about to flood" rather than "It's going to gusty today"?

ThreeB · 04/04/2024 11:03

It isn't designed to alert for a bit of bad weather, it's designed for life threatening situations where people need to act immediately. I think it was used during the recent large scale evacuations in Plymouth

CaptainMyCaptain · 04/04/2024 11:05

I heard it was used in Plymouth when they found the unexploded bomb and had to evacuate.

It wasn't used in my town in October when people in my town had to evacuate due to floods. It could have been useful then.

The alert last year was a trial to see if it would be something that would work. There were a few problems with the trial run which presumably they're now working to iron out (that's the purpose of a trial run, after all!)

It wasn't intended to be used for things like a bit of bad weather, only for situations when there's a serious and immediate threat to life nearby. So, things like an immediate terror threat, wildfires, chemical/gas leaks, sudden and severe floods etc.

I think the point was they were testing it.

You don't necessarily abandon something because the first test is not completely successful!

Surely what is more likely is that the test highlights where there are still problems that need sorting out, so that if it is ever required in earnest there is more chance of it working properly.

Ah OK thats that answered. Thank you

I was thinking more about the red warnings with flooding and stuff we have experienced on repeat in our area over the winter not just gusty weather but fair enough!

Obviously glad it's not gone off but it just popped into my head so thought I'd ask

They tested it once and then I never heard anything further about it, no info about how they planned to resolve the failed test or about them doing any further testing, this is why I assumed it was abandoned. Until this post, I hadn't heard anything about it since a couple of days after the failed test.

It was used in Plymouth. I was well aware of the bomb but wasn't expecting the alert. It made me jump

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 04/04/2024 11:28

I never even got the test alert.

RedPony1 · 04/04/2024 12:42

i was at a car show at Silverstone when it went off.
I had mine disabled anyway, but even so, it wasnt a loud flurry of phones going off with thousands of people there

FuzzyPuffling · 04/04/2024 17:15

Definitely used in Plymouth for the UXB. Unfortunately I didn’t get it, so that's me stuffed! ( I didn't get the test one either..double stuffed)
