Defrosting beef mince

MohairTortoise · 03/04/2024 18:16

Beef mince was taken out of the freezer last night and left wrapped up in the kitchen. It has defrosted.
AIBU to cook it or will I become ill?
I took it out of the freezer at about 9pm last night and it's now 6.15pm the following day.
AIBU to cook it and not expect to become ill?

It's absolutely fine.

Lifeinlists · 03/04/2024 18:17

It'll be fine when you cook it. That will kill any harmful bacteria - job done.

IClaudine · 03/04/2024 18:18

Hmm. I am quite lax about this sort of thing, but I am not sure I would risk it. How warm is your kitchen?

Caiti19 · 03/04/2024 18:18

I do just that all the time.

Why wouldn't you risk it?

Dacadactyl · 03/04/2024 18:19

I literally do this almost every day with any sort of meat.

I would cook it and eat it happily. Had it been a hot summers day I may not!

Mrsjayy · 03/04/2024 18:21

Sorry I misread your post op yes your defrosted mince will be fine.

Lifeinlists · 03/04/2024 18:22

@Mrsjayy OP clearly says the mince is now defrosted

PostItInABook · 03/04/2024 18:22

Isn’t the whole point of taking some meat out of the freezer exactly so that it will defrost ready for cooking? 🤔

IClaudine · 03/04/2024 18:24

Lifeinlists · 03/04/2024 18:19

Because I think mince can be a bit iffy if left out at room temperature for a few hours? That is why I asked how warm her kitchen is.

If it was fully defrosted and up to room temp by say midday, that is a long time for it to be sitting around?

Yeah I'm just talking absolute rubbish 😂

GetWhatYouWant · 03/04/2024 18:28

It'll be absolutely fine.

Yes but not in such a way that it hovers around the "danger zone" for a whole day, that's why you're meant to do it in the fridge.

mondaytosunday · 03/04/2024 18:31

Yes it would have taken a long time to defrost so good. Plus mince isn't like chicken or pork which I would be more cautious with.

soupfiend · 03/04/2024 18:35

I always defrost stuff out on the work top. Never in the fridge, it never gets defrosted. (in time)

Lifeinlists · 03/04/2024 18:45

@IClaudine It'll be fine as long as it's cooked thoroughly. The crucial bit is raising the temperature high enough to kill any pathogenic bacteria, which, anyway, haven't had time to multiply massively or form spores - it's only been defrosted a few hours and presumably still in its wrapper.
A few days and green and crawling with maggots and then - maybe not!

ps I like your user name!

MohairTortoise · 03/04/2024 19:57

I opened it, smelled it and it smelled fine so I cooked it.
Thanks everyone.
I understand your reservations MrsJayy, because I felt the same, hence why I asked on here.
I feel absolutely fine so far. 🤞
