Would I be a weirdo if I used a translator tomorrow?

I took my DC to the park today & my son was playing with another boy from his class ( they ended up playing together for around 3 hours all in all and left when we left)

My DS plays with the little boy frequently at school and I recognised the name as soon as my son said his name, but i didnt know he was bi lingual ( never seen him in person, I'm always one of the last parents at pick up ) He was with his mum and she couldnt speak English but we exchanged several smiles and laughs at the kids playing,

As we were leaving her little boy asked my DS if he was coming tomorrow, I asked him what time and he couldnt pick a time so with me and the mum gesturing our wrists ( watch ) and fingers we agreed to meet at a time tomorrow so the boys can play together again

Do you think she will think I'm a weirdo if I download a translator? Is it weird? I'm not expecting to have massive conversations with her with it but at the same time she seemed really nice and i think if we spoke the same language we would of chatted more.

I have ADHD, awful anxiety and I'm on a waiting list for an autism assessment so I dont know If I'm just really over thinking it? Or if I'm being weird 😂🙈HELP!

No, she won’t think you’re weird. Sounds a good idea to me.

Mmhmmn · 02/04/2024 21:06

Trust yourself more 🙂

CarpetSausage · 02/04/2024 21:07

No, I think that's okay. If you brought along a human translator, that would be weird, but to say a few things via Google translate etc would be okay. I think you'll be able to gauge from the other person if she feels uncomfortable about it.

Alaina7 · 02/04/2024 21:07

Not weird at all, it makes sense and sounds useful!

Zonder · 02/04/2024 21:08

Google translate is your friend. That's really nice of you to think of it. I'm sure the mum will be really touched.

Babyandmexox · 02/04/2024 21:09

Worth a try!! Doesn't make you look weird just looks like your making an effort which is quite nice really!!

DSD9472 · 02/04/2024 21:09

Using a phone translator is fine, and a lovely idea.

Hiring a physical person and bringing them to the park- then no.

MumChp · 02/04/2024 21:09

Do try!

Mrsjayy · 02/04/2024 21:10

Where I volunteer I use Google translate for casual conversations it's great, I bet the mum will be pleased you made the effort.

tomorrowisanotherdate · 02/04/2024 21:10

what language is it? Use google translate

mitogoshi · 02/04/2024 21:11

Google translate is amazing. Not weird at all

Hotdogity · 02/04/2024 21:12

Great call. Shows your friendly,
engaged and want your kids to develop a friendship

HurryupHenry · 02/04/2024 21:15

It’s a lovely idea!

HurryupHenry · 02/04/2024 21:15

Also, where is she from? Could you try to learn something like ‘hello, my name is…’ ?

magimedi · 02/04/2024 21:16

I now live in a country where the language is not my first nor am I fluent in it.

I would be DELIGHTED if you used your phone to help to communicate. I would take it as a real compliment that you wanted to communicate with me.

Maybe suggest to her that she could do the same.

Google translate is OK but DeepL is the best translation app I have used yet..

I think its a brilliant idea and I bet the other mum will love it. Maybe she is currently looking up phrases on Google Translate as well!!

Sealtheenvelope · 02/04/2024 21:18

It's a really nice idea. Use DeepL rather than Google, it's so much better (I'm an expat and that's what we all use where I live).

DistractMe · 02/04/2024 21:19

I use Google Translate with my Ukrainian friend all the time (well less now, as her English is really coming on).

It'll be fine.

So glad to hear another vote for DeepL.

Singleandproud · 02/04/2024 22:36

No it's a lovely idea, if the boys strike up a good friendship I might try learning some of their first language on Duolingo.
I always tried to learn the basics for children I taught, a 'hello' and 'thank you' in their language was always appreciated.

herbygarden · 02/04/2024 23:03

I think that's a lovely idea ❤️

Springchickenonion · 02/04/2024 23:05

I use translate app a lot. A lot of my dhs friends don't speak English well and nor me their language. It a really useful tool

Noseybookworm · 02/04/2024 23:11

It's a nice gesture and I'm sure his mum will appreciate you making the effort ☺️

So glad to hear another vote for DeepL.

Its great isn't it. We've had some hilarious cock-ups using Google translate, DeepL is much more reliable.

HazelSnail · 03/04/2024 00:48

I used to have a coworker who I loved that didn't speak very good English. We often used Google translate to speak and had a very good laugh about it!
