Was I extorted for a cherry bakewell?

Cheeribakewell · 02/04/2024 19:02

I went to my usual sandwich shop for some baps/cons/barn cakes (im
being inclusive).

Its a cash only place and usually I buy two baps but today was one and a hot drink.

i didn’t notice but the lady put a cherry bakewell in my plastic bag (not sure if she charges for plastic bags) and Asked for £6.50. I handed over £5 noteand queried why it was so much and why there was a cake in my bag.

she instantly said I could pay next time but didn’t say “oh sorry I thought you wanted a cherry bakewell”. I have a feeling she was sneaking it it, but rationally does that make sense.

I had to be somewhat forceful in saying no I didn’t want it.

Aibu in thinking she wanted me to buy a cherry bakewell to increase her sales?

I could be autistic as I find it hard to read situations and I get taken advantage of

Why would you accept an order that wasn’t what you requested?

the normal thing to do is point out that they’ve made an error with your order.

toomuchfaff · 02/04/2024 19:05

nope... weird. I didn't ask for a CB, I didn't want one, not paying next time either woman, take it away! #lactoseintolerant

damn the tasty pastries...

Dacadactyl · 02/04/2024 19:06

I'd think that this was an honest mistake from the lady working in the shop and think no more about it.

NarnianQueen · 02/04/2024 19:08

How bizarre! Maybe they made too many cherry bakewells and need to get rid of them

thenewaveragebear1983 · 02/04/2024 19:09

Tread carefully @Cheeribakewell , I read in the paper about gangs who give drugs away for free and then when you’re addicted they start charging you more and more until you end up having to join the gang and sell drugs cherry Bakewell to repay your debts.

save yourself now

Fulshaw · 02/04/2024 19:10

It’s not you - this seems a very odd thing for her to do.

NormalForNuneaton · 02/04/2024 19:11

Do they do meal deals?

Maybe she was trying to up-sell to a meal deal?

Scarletttulips · 02/04/2024 19:12

See all you can think of now is Cherry Bakewell -

I think it contained a secret message of help as the woman is being beaten and raped by her husband and wanted some help to escape!

RockSocks · 02/04/2024 19:13

It could be an honest mistake
I work in a bakery and the amount of people you serve in a day can be ridiculous and you could be remembering an order from earlier that day which was similar or even the day before

It's not OK that you had to be somewhat forceful to make her remove it from the transaction though, it should have been taken off immediately after you pointed out you didn't want it

😂

In seriousness, no it’s highly unlikely she was trying to sneak something in your bag and make you pay for it.

If bakeries want to push up sales, they will generally ask you- Are you interested in a Cherry Bakewell today? They’re on special offer..Or would you like to try a free sample? ..and then ask if you’d like to buy the product.

Customers would query being charged more than they expected to pay- just as you did.

Don’t over think this! What you said was fine.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 02/04/2024 19:16

Go back tonight and post said CB through letter box. No explanation necessary.

If you're unlucky she will foist on you again when you next visit and the whole cycle will repeat itself.

Be prepared for a long battle, where much stamina may be required.

RainbowZebraWarrior · 02/04/2024 19:18

What's a cons?

What's a barn cake? Do you mean a barm cake?

<Misses point of thread>

Cob.

Hoppinggreen · 02/04/2024 19:22

Now i want a cherry bakewell

SmileyClare · 02/04/2024 19:22

I think the mistake you made was handing over a fiver and then asking why there was a cake in your bag?

Its better to query an incorrect order first before trying to pay.
But anyway, no harm done.

I’m sure she wasn’t trying to take advantage of you. Hardly worth it for £1.50

GanninHyem · 02/04/2024 19:20

Cob.

Ah, cobs.

I used to own a café, so got used to folk asking for barms, baps, rolls etc. Never thought of a cob.

We call them buns here.

Edited to add: or stotties. Which, judging by your user name, you'll be familiar with.

BandyMcBandface · 02/04/2024 19:24

I’d have just taken it as a sign I was meant to buy, and eat, the cherry bakewell tbh

CultOfTheAirFryer · 02/04/2024 19:26

I’ve had this before. Shop keeper pushes something on you as though it’s a gift, and then charges you for it and relies on you not checking the total or being too awkward/embarrassed to push back.

It’s only one step up from the people shoving roses in your hand on the tube.

I’ve never experienced this in a shop! Although yes I’ve had a few sprigs of “lucky heather” shoved in my hand in the street and money demanded.

What did you have pushed on you at the till as a gift (you were then charged for)?

TheSnowyOwl · 02/04/2024 19:39

I’ve not experienced this and would assume that she genuinely thought you had asked for it and that she was being nice in saying you could pay another time. However, your theory might also be right. How long have you been going to the bakery and is this a one off?

Crunchymum · 02/04/2024 19:45

So the cherry bakewell wasn't a freebie and had you kept it, you'd have owed £1.50 next time you went in?

usually it’s £6 or so for two baps so I knew £5 not would cover what I had (one bap and £1.50 drink). She asked for £6.50 and I thought the cake was a gift (because I’m stupid and she caught me of guard). I just felt scammed

I think I would have owed £1.50 as it’s £1.80 or £1.70. It was huge, I don’t eat sweet stuff either

So are you now in debt to the tune of a cherry bakewell?

Been going there for 1.5 years depending on work and baby
