With ultrasounds so easily bookable and reasonably priced now, is it sensible (obviously only if household finances allow) to get a scan done before seeing gp / to inform If gp visit is necessary?

I've had a niggling upper abdominal pain for weeks and thought I'll just go get a scan done instead of being a nuisance to the gp.

I hate booking appointments now, and after dealing with numerous ovarian cysts and using private scanning services to inform on that it just seems an easy way to address it.

But dh thinks ill annoy the gp by not following proper process and they'll assume I have healthy anxiety (I really don't!). What do you think?

I wouldn’t worry about upsetting your GP. If you want a scan just book one.

My GPs are very happy with any private info that I bring along.

They couldn't care less and probably are quite happy about the fact that people are saving them an NHS referral.

And you won't need to see the GP if the scan is clear will you? All my private scans have been performed by a doctor and they have all shown me the screen and talked me through the results at the time.

So I've had three pelvic US in the last 12 months and have come away knowing the size of my cysts, the endometrial thickness and any areas of concern.

I'm now with BUPA and you don't need to get a GP referral for a lot of their services.

Just make sure it’s a medical scan rather than those that are for taking your family to see the baby.

Not a baby viewer:) a medical scan. I've used the same company to confirm the presence of cysts in the past

My concern is that it may falsely reassure you. An ultrasound is a very small part of an entire diagnostic process and shouldn’t replace a thorough assessment and other investigations.
So, get a scan if you wish, but for any health concerns (pain etc) please still see your GP too! 😊

It s fine. You can go to GP with info .
Given your history makes sense.
I had a scan and I have 10 cysts please refer me
I had a scan and no cysts so it might be something else

Thank you. I would see gp either way as the pain needs fixing but i hope it'll just save ang back and forth.

After my second ovarian torsion I still had to argue with a gp that I needed a scan when I felt I had cysts again (and had a huge one in the end). It took 3 visits to get them to book a non urgent scan which took months to happen and then a wait for referral by gp back to gynaecology which had a long wait again.

The next three times I turned up with scan and it helped. It's different pain this time but I'm hoping i could smooth things by having a scan done l
