4 adults living at home - how much on weekly food shop?

6 medium effort weekly dinners - what I mean is cooking is shared and each person is expected to put in a bit of effort and cook from scratch-ish. Thai green curry, lasagna, risotto as examples. Stops unfairness if you cook a decent meal and someone else just bungs in a frozen pizza.

Booze bought separately. 2 people wfh so includes lunches.

Excludes pet food (bought in bulk).

How much do you think is reasonable to spend weekly?

DH and my food shop comes to around £500 pm, so, say £50pw pp being generous.

JustShout · 02/04/2024 12:09

£180 ish. More if you like an evening snack or similar...

Zanatdy · 02/04/2024 13:18

£150

Sorry, that's including children. £42 for a man, £32 for a woman.

I’m not sure how to vote OP.
What is your AIBU?

Incl lunches, breakfast, toiletries, cleaning stuff, soft drinks or just dinners??
If incl above I think £50 pp per week is about what I spend

Sgtmajormummy · 02/04/2024 13:29

You can live well without scrimping for £6 per adult per day.
Cooking from scratch with some frozen and semi-prepped. Meat, dairy, coffee and tea, fruit and veg. Bakery and biscuits. No alcohol.
£24 x 7 = £168

SunnySunnySunny · 02/04/2024 13:33

We have a similar set up but more people at home for lunch most days and spend £220 per week (no alcohol). That does include cleaning products.

Muddywalks34 · 02/04/2024 13:37

I spend around £1000-£1200 per month on 2 adults and 2 older teens, but this also covers all cleaning products/toiletries and alcohol. I probably cook from scratch 6 days a week. 2 adults mostly WFH, teens with big appetites. We eat well but things like steak, leg of lamb etc would be a treat and not an everyday type meal. I have a weekly Ocado shop delivered then do top ups as Lidl, Morrisons or home bargains. I do also often have the teens friends over at the weekend and between them they take a lot of feeding!

So we are averaging £230/week. It’s crept up from £200 the past month or so.
