Help me choose a hobby!

Hey hive mind 👋

Another thread has got me thinking about hobbies, and how I could really do with one 😂

I enjoy musical theatre (going to see shows, I’d be terrible acting in them!), cooking/baking, reading (but I would hate a book club), listening to regular pop music. I go to the gym but don’t particularly enjoy it - and I volunteer as a mentor. I don’t really like crafts. I don’t drink - happy to be around alcohol but I get why others don’t enjoy having a teetotaller in their midst! All in all I find myself pretty boring, and find myself increasingly aware of how few opinions I hold - I spend my free time scrolling socials and binge watching series.

Timewise ideally I want something I can do once a week in London. Preferably during the day at lunch, but could do an evening. Doubt I can commit more time than that as I’m a full time working single parent. I want to make friends and have a club/group I enjoy.

So tell me Mumsnetters, what ‘hobbies’ can I look for if I haven’t prohibited them all with my list 😂

YABU - there’s nothing left for you, enjoy your boring life 😏
YANBU - here’s my ideas!

A dance class (in whatever dance style floats your boat)? Or a dance fitness type of thing like clubbercise classes?

Birch101 · 02/04/2024 07:44

Film club? - Evenings
Pub quiz
Language class
Ceroc dancing
yoga
pole dancing
Not really sure what you could fit in a lunch break apart from a walk

Rock Choir?

Everywheretwice · 02/04/2024 07:46

Just try everything.

Even if you don't 'love' the idea of it, you might be surprised.

I moved to a new town and tried every class/hobby to meet people; the ones I stuck at and loved were things I thought I'd dislike.

myavocadoisgrowing · 02/04/2024 07:47

If you read a lot how about creative writing?

lap90 · 02/04/2024 07:48

Join a choir - there are ones that specifically sing musical theatre in London and are non audition.

OldMrsHempstock · 02/04/2024 07:52

Yoga or pilates. I really think everyone who's able should do these, they help so much with so many things and as we age they massively improve mobility.

Why are you so against a book club? Mine have become some of my closest friends.

Last year, in my mid 50s, I started playing non-contact rugby. This season I joined another team so that I could play twice a week.

I'm not especially sporty but I've had lots of fun. One group was set up specifically to get women of all ages into rugby so it's absolute basics and a huge range of skills and fitness. The other is more competitive and most people are more experienced than me but still supportive of newbies.

I also go open-water swimming but that bores everyone else rigid so I won't say any more 😉

Running? Start with couch to 5k (nhs app) and see how you go!

Rock Choir?

This. Most definitely this. No auditions, tons of fun, belting out all your favourite songs with others like-minded people, fantastic opportunities. Changed my life

iLovee · 02/04/2024 08:14

Ooh what sort of mentoring do you do?

TimeGrabsYouByTheWrist · 02/04/2024 08:16

I took up kick boxing which is super fun! For more exciting than the gym.

I also have drumming and piano lessons.

Just pick something random and try it.

If you read a lot how about creative writing?

This is a good idea. CityLit for example do some good creative writing classes. CityLit also have various other classes in things like Dance, Languages, jewellery making, music and many other things during the day so it might be good to have a look into that even just to get some ideas!

I’d also suggest a sports club (netball, football) as they tend to be very sociable and while some want players coming multiple times a week, some are ok if people just commit to come along once a week.

Or a weekly dance class?

Zanatdy · 02/04/2024 08:17

Join a walking group, I’ve met so many lovely ladies via mine

Whataweirdsituation · 02/04/2024 16:20

Thanks all for the ideas! Am definitely going to look for a Rock Choir, that sounds amazing :) ~ and will take @Everywheretwice 's advice and try everything, starting with everything listed above!
