Designer brands?

To think you can’t be all “I would never spend that on a bag/trainers/coat” when you are wearing fake designer items?

You only bought the fake for the “status” so people believe you have money.

I have fake Gucci trainers.

I didn't buy them because I want people to think I have money or status.

I bought them because I love the genuine ones but can't afford them.

So bore off.

Notmyuser · 01/04/2024 23:12

I just buy what I like. I’ve never bought fake designer though, and I never will. If I wanted designer, I’d buy them second hand on vinted or save for them.

Femme2804 · 01/04/2024 23:35

I got fake chanel. Because i love it soo much but its too expensive. But i can afford any other bag. I got dior, gucci etc. But chanel and hermes out of my price range. Do you know what. All my friends who are rich enough and able to buy birkin, they also buy fake birkins because they only can afford 1 or 2 but want any other colours. So its not because ‘the status’ its just simply because i love the shape of it but i the price its ridiculous

Ponoka7 · 01/04/2024 23:41

I love the Eagle on Kurt Geiger bags. I've got real ones and good copies. I wouldn't spend that amount on a phone bag that I'm going to use around three times a year. So YABU.

I think you’re missing the point of what people mean when they say “I’d never spend that on a designer bag”. They’re not saying they don’t like the look of the designer brand or looking down on people who buy them. They’re simply saying that they don’t feel it’s worth spending £1,500 of their money on it when there are cheaper alternatives available that they like just as much - and those alternatives include fakes.

For example, there’s a pair of Givenchy sunglasses that I really love. But I don’t love them enough to spend £400 on them. I could afford them, but ultimately I don’t feel they’re worth £400 of my money when I could spend that £400 on several other things that I want/need more. If I saw a decent quality fake pair for £30 I’d happily spend that, though. Nothing to do with wanting to make people think I’m rich - it’s just about what I think it is/isn’t worth spending a large amount of my money on.

You can in fact be "all" anything you like. And your motives for such may be many and varied. As other posters have pointed out, this isn't necessarily about the "status" claim you've assumed in op. But rather about personal "value" and wants. Of course some buy the fake for the status. But many buy it because they like but cannot afford the real deal. Others buy it because they like but cannot justify the cost of the real deal. Others buy it because they believe the mark up on the real deal is profiteering and unreasonable in itself.

The attitude of "I would never buy designer" can sometimes be indicative of inverse snobbery though, which is what I think op is getting at. If so then I agree, inverse snobbery in the form of looking down upon those who can afford xyz and judging them as lesser for paying that price- is annoying and particularly so when that "integrity" only flows so far as the wallet allows I know a lottery winner who used to judge me for being a snob for buying £10 bottles of wine rather than the £5 bottles she bought. Now she couldn't possibly touch "that shit" should I bring a bottle of my £10 plonk to her dinner party-

AngelQuartz · 02/04/2024 00:56

I’ve got a pair of fake/dupe Apple AirPod headphones for the gym. Because am I fuck going to spend £400 on the real ones.

I think the majority of “designer items” I see out and about are fake. Especially Gucci belts, Louis Vuitton & Gucci bags, McQueen trainers etc. Doesn’t bother me and the majority of people probably don’t care what others think of their “status”.

There are so many influencers on TikTok who do hauls from notorious Chinese fake/replica websites such as SaraMart and DHGate. No one cares that they’re fake.

Thanks for explaining it much better.

You should care if it’s fake, it’s a pretty awful industry to support.

A lot of wealthy people who can afford the Birkins will buy one genuine perhaps and rest will be replicas. Could they afford all the different colours of birkins of course they can. The replicas will look genuine because those who wear it coming from that kind of wealth won't raise any suspicions when they do wear a replica. There's better things to invest your money in than handbags even for the ultra rich.

Runnerinthenight · 02/04/2024 01:35

I'd never buy fake. If I can't afford genuine, then I don't have it.

Northernsouloldies · 02/04/2024 01:37

Fake clothes are cheap shit with a brand logo made in very questionable conditions.
I got offered fake shirt years ago price £30 it was like a dish towel the real one £55 .

Ginslings · 02/04/2024 01:46

I work on my feet a lot. By a long way, by far the worst trainees I have every spent good money on have been genuine Kurt Geigers and Tommy Hilfigers.

Northernsouloldies · 02/04/2024 01:48

Armani and boss were my worst buys ..6 weeks worn only on a Saturday for few hours..soles worn down.

JeysusH · 02/04/2024 01:50

I think you're talking about branded items.

Not designer clothes.

Northernsouloldies · 02/04/2024 01:57

Most fake stuff is branded anything from clothing to electrical.
Lv,Viv Westwood,GHd,airpods are all brands.

JeysusH · 02/04/2024 02:03

I know.

I wear The Row, Maxmara, Loewe, Saint Laurent, and smaller houses.

Northernsouloldies · 02/04/2024 02:06

Agreed,that's real designer wear
Especially the small fashion houses with limited collections.
