I earn well

LegalAlienWooHoo · 01/04/2024 20:29

Am I being unreasonable to hate the phrase 'X earns well'?

It really grates on me. Not sure why, it's maybe that it's the focus is on earning rather than working, and that someone's strived to 'earn well' and if someone else doesn't, that's their failing.

Before the inevitable cries of jealousy, I am quite highly paid, I would just never ever say 'I earn well' as it makes me cringe.

Just me or anyone else?

What's the difference between "I earn well" and "I'm quite highly paid"

TeenLifeMum · 01/04/2024 20:39

I cringe more when someone says “and okay ish wage” and it turns out they’re taking any 80k. So removed from reality it grates. Not jealousy, just annoyed at the pretence and bs.

The phrasing. Just like 'u ok hun' is different from 'are you feeling alright?'.

“I am quite highly paid” is worse for me

ChangeIing · 01/04/2024 20:46

Surely it depends on the context?

”I have a sore leg, I earn well. Can anyone recommend pain relief?”

vs

”My husband says I’m not contribute to the house because I work 4 days a week instead of 5. I earn well”.

EIIaM · 01/04/2024 20:50

Oh so you don't mind people mentioning that they are decent earners, you just don't like how it's said? Yeah YABVU then.

Vistada · 01/04/2024 20:51

"Dh earns well, think six figures"

Makes my foot itch

alwaysbuffingnails · 01/04/2024 20:52

On here, I find people will often say they earn well or are on a 'good wage' and it then turns out they're on minimum wage!

Yep.

The other one I hate is 'Beyonce and Jay-Z share three children' rather than 'Beyonce and Jay-Z have three children together'.

I also hate the term 'share children'.

Someone on here once wrote "DH and his friend shared a girl", meaning they had a threesome. Still gives me the rage today.

Wow that's awful!

It is cringe and I can't imagine a scenario where it comes up normally but I work 2 days a week in a minimum wage job . We have juts bought a million pound house and I have had inventive eyebrow raises and I just say my dh has a good job which is not about money but more about achievement for me although I avoid it at all costs .

To me it's incredibly tone deaf to talk about earning well to people that don't !

Sidebeforeself · 01/04/2024 21:15

I hate “think….xyz” rather than actually saying what it is, and people who start sentences with “Way to….” And end them with …” much?” ..as in “jealous much?”

So my nightmare would be someone saying

”Way to make people feel bad OP. I earn a decent amount..think something over 60k..jealous much?”

Nope can’t say I have even read this on mumsnet. It’s usually folk that are on high wages that love to tell everyone.

toomanyy · 01/04/2024 23:07

If anything ‘I’m highly paid’ is worse because ‘I earn well’ could just mean you earn well enough to support yourself, whereas ‘I’m highly paid’ could be seen as arrogant.

I think ‘I’m quite highly paid’ is worse, like good for you and all your money. ‘I earn well’ can just mean you do well enough to live well, or well paid for your industry, not necessarily oh yes look at me I’m highly paid. It’s all just personal preference isn’t it.

That might be so as not to attract sniffy comments from posters who would regard £80k as the sort of salary a mediocre recent grad might settle for and are determined to let everyone know it. Unfortunately, I have seen such comments more than once.

I think posters are stuck between a rock and a hard place if they mention salary - don’t express awareness of your privilege and good luck and you’re tone deaf, say you’re on a good salary and there are always people keen to take you down a peg or two.

TeenLifeMum · 01/04/2024 23:40

Any sniffy poster looking down on 80k salaries is probably a low earner in fantasy world. You can’t trust anyone on the forum.

I feel the same about 'good jobs'. As in 'My DH has a very good job'. Why not just say 'well paid' as 'good' jobs to me are occupations like nursing, teaching, policing etc.

Yes! As if the only thing that matters about work is the salary.
