To have not bought Easter eggs for my cousins’ children?

Sodo · 01/04/2024 18:05

It would be 6 eggs to buy in total. It seems like a lot. We see them infrequently maybe twice a year. My parents still buy for them. My sister has now started to and raised an eyebrow when I told her I hadn’t bought for them, as if she thought I was being stingy.

AIBU to not buy for them? I think own children and nieces/nephews is enough, surely, otherwise it gets expensive? Every Easter egg I’ve seen has been £4 cheapest. £25 is my fuel for the week - cost of living crisis and all

If you weren't seeing them at Easter, YANBU. If you were, it's a bit mean, you can get small eggs for ÂŁ1.50 in big supermarkets.

No, haven’t seen them since November and probably won’t again until July or August.

If money is tight then buying for your own children is plenty.

FWI, I never bought Easter eggs for my nephews and my sister never bought one for my dd. Because the dc never had them, they never expected them so there was no disappointment.

Buying for the dc of a cousin you rarely see seems completely unnecessary.

TeaKitten · 01/04/2024 18:09

Plenty of smaller eggs for ÂŁ1.25-ÂŁ1.50 were available

Hadalifeonce · 01/04/2024 18:10

We don't buy for anyone we won't actually be with over Easter. Haven't done for ages, neither do people buy for us.

Dacadactyl · 01/04/2024 18:11

I have a lot of people to buy eggs for and the cost adds up. For older kids I've started doing a box of Easter chocs for the family (ÂŁ4ish) and then single Malteser bunnies for them each (they're like 59p)

2dogsandabudgie · 01/04/2024 18:11

Not unreasonable at all if you weren't seeing them.

MumChp · 01/04/2024 18:12

If I saw them at Easter they would get an egg. If not none.

Needmorelego · 01/04/2024 18:13

You obviously shop in strange shops as everywhere had the ÂŁ1.50 Cadbury ones for sale. Piles of them everywhere. Or the little bags of Mini Eggs/Malteser Bunnies/Mini Creme Eggs etc which were ÂŁ1....also everywhere. Plenty still in the shops today tbh.
Oh well.
I am sure they will get over it.
Edit : sorry.....miss read. Did you say you weren't meeting up with the cousins?
In that case I wouldn't have bought them some - because posting eggs isn't exactly practical.
As I said.... they'll get over it.

HowardBishop · 01/04/2024 18:16

You could get a small bag of mini eggs or one of those smallish eggs if you were seeing them in person. And if you could afford it.

If you are not seeing them then don’t bother. And if you cannot afford it then of course you must not spend money on that.

Musiclover234 · 01/04/2024 18:20

I didn’t buy for my now adult nephews/nieces. Also not for friends kids.. who get utterly spoiled. I got 2/3 eggs and just from close family at Easter as a kid. Was plenty. Some of the social media Easter gifts/choc are ridiculous.

Pogointospring · 01/04/2024 18:47

I buy a chocolate bunny each for my own children. Their grandparents on each side buy them a moderately sized egg too. That feels like quite enough to be honest, I don’t buy for my sibling’s children and they don’t buy for mine.

I don’t think I could even name all my cousins’ children, I certainly don’t buy them Easter eggs.

Riverlee · 01/04/2024 18:48

If you weren’t seeing them over the Easter holidays, then not strange.

Badgerandfox227 · 01/04/2024 18:50

We had a few years of this at Christmas and had a conversation the year before last to say we wouldn’t be doing it anymore. Neices/nephews is fine, anything more is excessive. As a nation we do too much and puts pressure on people to return.

Kalevala · 01/04/2024 18:51

Did you see them on Easter weekend and if so did you know you'd be seeing them? Depends on the family and how many closer children you are buying for I'd say. I only buy for family children I see. Medium eggs were only ÂŁ1.50 though and less on offer.

Pineapplewaves · 01/04/2024 20:09

Tesco recently sold medium eggs for ÂŁ2.00 each and later large eggs for ÂŁ3.50 each. Asda sold the small eggs for 60p for a few days last month. I always look out for offers leading up to Easter and buy eggs for the children I will be seeing over the Easter weekend.

I don't buy eggs for children I won't be seeing over the Easter weekend.

Simplelobsterhat · 01/04/2024 20:17

We don't even buy eggs for nieces and nephews in our family, apart from perhaps some for an egg hunt together if we are seeing them Easter weekend itself. There is only so much chocolate kids can eat at a time! The fact that your parents do is much more than I'd expect - it's parents and grandparents only with our family as a rule. Again apart from an occasional extra if you are seeing someone, and only small if that. Don't get sucked in to following your sister or where does it end!

NameChangedAgainn · 01/04/2024 20:30

YANBU. I only buy for the children I will see on/around Easter

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 01/04/2024 20:32

You don’t buy for children you aren’t seeing on Easter Sunday surely? I’d consider that “the rule” if anything.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 01/04/2024 20:33

I would assume that they had enough chocolate from their immediate family and the parents wouldn't appreciate another load of eggs turning up.

pootlin · 01/04/2024 20:35

YANBU. I only buy for my nieces and nephews, or if I’m seeing my friends or cousin's kids on Easter then I would buy for them too.

The only time I would buy for cousins kids is if cousins parents bought them for me as a child.

WillYouPutYourCoatOn · 01/04/2024 20:39

Aldi/Lidl Lindt bunny dupes are only ÂŁ1-2. And much nicer. I think ÂŁ6-12 once a year isn't horrendous. Do they buy for your DC?

Gingercatlover · 01/04/2024 20:56

YANBU Nieces and Nephews only here.

Createausername1970 · 01/04/2024 21:03

Your cousin's children?

Perfectly reasonable if you don't see them frequently. They will probably get eggs from their own parents and possibly grandparents, and from your sister by the sounds of it. How many eggs does one child need?

JPGR · 01/04/2024 22:28

How many Easter eggs do kids need fgs? One from their parents and possibly one from
grandparents. It’s ridiculous to be buying for all and sundry.
