People still buying bags when shopping

Auburngal · 01/04/2024 16:29

It's 8.5 years since the bag charges were introduced in England (Oct 4 2015) and longer for other parts of the UK. My friend's DS was born on that day and she has pointed out he was born on the same day bag charges were introduced in England and people are shocked.

Why do people still not come shopping without bags? See the same faces most days at work buying bags. "Left the bags in the car" - pack at the car then!

If people buy on average 10 bags at 30p each per week at supermarkets, shops like B&M, Poundland - that's £156 a year. People don't look at the price as a whole they think "its only 30p".

Then see people down my road using brand new carrier bags for rubbish. Bin bags are cheaper (per unit), bigger and able to tie them up properly.

Then my work is opposite a few other shops - see customers buy two items and buy a bag from us when they have room in another shop's bag they just purchased from. What's that about?

The number of times I have bought bags is in single figures. For example - buying a coat - none of the bags I had were big enough. Brought 2 bags with me and one broke - it wasn't the retailer's bag in question. So couldn't get the replacement free.

Please stop buying bags. Fold one up inside your handbag. I am ok with those who bought more than they intend and don't have room in their own bags they have brought with them.

Taking your own bags is a simple way to help with CoL.

What a judgmental bag you are (fnar) !

I take bags when i plan a trip but often make unscheduled stops at a shop or buy more than i planned. There are heaps of reasons why someone might need to buy one. Get off your high horse and find something important to get worked up about

Seen people juggle their shopping and drop something about a few minutes walk from the supermarket

Too forgetful to bring a bag? Too tight to buy a bag? Karma.

You sound really horrible. I have adhd and can barely remember my own name some days. Im capable of planning about two hours ahead tops

rosegoldJune · 02/04/2024 17:59

I don’t drive, use public transport or walk, I don’t always remember to put a carrier bag in my handbag, I unpack my shopping & put the bag in a drawer, if in a hurry I just forget.

celticprincess · 02/04/2024 18:03

I generally remember to take bags food shopping but rarely when I go clothes shopping. But I’m not keen on using my food shopping bags for clothes shopping.

mum2monkeys88 · 02/04/2024 18:08

You'd hate me lol the amount of reusable bags I've bought and left at home

is unreal lol They now have become laundry bags . I do how ever re use the plastic bags I buy we don't have a main bin and use a carrier bag and throw out each night and also use them in the cat litter tray and the bathroom bin...

I don’t see the problem. The 10p goes to charity so I’m actually doing my bit by paying for bags.

Can you be 100% sure about that?

1974devon · 02/04/2024 18:24

I often forget a bag..but I also find bags for life.useful for charity shop drop offs etc
Some of the bags people get out and put in packing area are pretty grim and.dirty looking....relatives had food shops and said some.of.the bags brought out to put shopping.in were health hazards..
Prob a happy middle ground as usual. But you won't stop people buying them

Lalalondon99 · 02/04/2024 18:29

' I am ok with those who bought more than they intend and don't have room in their own bags they have brought with them.'

Who made you the judge of who buys bags? Have you considered that maybe some people have harder lives than you?

I've got a brain injury, severely disabled, and care for my two adult daughters with LD- I literally cannot remember my name most days and only have one hand so the higher level tasks like bringing a bag to a shop get overlooked. I have no help.

Maybe think about who you could help in life rather than sit in judgement (about literally the most petty thing I've seen recently on Mumsnet)?

kennycat · 02/04/2024 18:54

I’ve still only bought one bag ever! I’m quite proud of this ☺️
mt husband on the other hand must have bought about a billion. I despair!
he doesn’t even do the shopping; he just gets a bag for a
pack of rennies and a bottle of coke.

Queenfierce · 02/04/2024 18:54

Oh dear I buy them regularly and yes also use them for rubbish
Sorry for the inconvenience caused to you in this distressing situation 😬

Chocolatefreak · 02/04/2024 18:57

@Jumpingthruhoops my point was, ever heard of the expression 'rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic'?!

TeaPleaseX · 02/04/2024 19:02

Are you my husband? Today when cleaning out the Pantry there was a bag of bags. 42 Sainsbury’s thick yellow bags to be precise! All in one folded up heap!
But I have done good. They are going to the woman's charity down the road who use them for helping people pack in emergencies or food parcel things. So they've actually come in handy!

Seriously it isnt hard to bring bags.

seriously, it is, as I said, I can't carry a bag, and I dont have a car, if I am doing shopping on the way home from work I normally buy a bag then. The alternative is to try and carry one in my pocket all day, and it will be constantly in the way, and as likely as not, fall out and get lost at some stage

Because you’ve posted about your abroad holidays on other threads.

Sorry, did you think planes have ‘nothing to do’ with damaging the environment?

I just don’t like a hypocrite that’s all. Attacking people (who aren’t actually disagreeing with you!) because they carry things in their pockets not in bags, apparently this is damaging the environment (lol!!) yet you holiday on planes.

This! Those who condemn others for harming the environment, then entertain air travel, are the biggest hypocrites.

It reminds me of the vegan they once had on GMB, who got all hissy when asked if his belt and shoes were made of leather!! 😂

Can we stick to the topic which is plastic bags and not derail the thread.

I assume you mean it's pointless reusing bags, not flying, not driving, not procreating ('rearranging the deckchairs') because the world ('Titanic') is fooked anyway?

Busted.

What a massive hypocrite.

It's not derailing the thread at all.

It's trying to ascertain whether someone who's vehemently opposed to (presumed) single-use carrier bags is as passionate about other things - like air travel - which seriously harm the environment? It's all part of the same conversation.

StressedOutButProudMama · 02/04/2024 19:23

I have memory issues so remembering bags is hard. But If I was to buy say a storage box I wouldn't buy a bag I'd just chuck it in the box.
I do but too many bags though I have sack fulls at home because I won't throw them away. My DS 11 has taken to collecting the canvas bags with patterns images on. So we have thousands of those neatly flattened out and ironed. But normal carrier bags I sometimes have to buy unless I remember as I go to to the store and they have a carrier bag recycle then I must admit sometimes I just pinch a few from there. I'm not going to change my habits and yes I do use them for rubbish sometimes. Usually after they've been used for shopping so they are been recycled. As for the price of black bags they aren't cheap either. For a decent 30p carrier bag that's not going to Rio in the bin and make a mess of my wheelie bin over a cheap roll of bags that tear at every opportunity. If I was to buy black bags as thick as the carriers they'd be far more expensive. Anyway I detest black bags they take years to rot down and are much worse hen the recycled carrier bags of today and they make everything smell of fag ash.

Ihearyousingingdownthewire · 02/04/2024 19:29

I buy bags every single time.

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 02/04/2024 19:29

I’m enjoying the OP’s outrage. Worked herself up into a frenzy based on nothing. I can relate. 😂. I buy bags but because they’re so bloody expensive I buy one! They’re often massive these days and I manage to get most stuff in. I’m a bit of a random
shopper - big shop is always online. No bags for me then! gleefully prances away

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 02/04/2024 19:29

I’ve just bought one of those bags which fold up tiny made from recycled plastic. Took me ages to find one though.
I always try and take a bag, sometimes I have to buy a bag if I make unexpected purchases.

Floopani · 01/04/2024 16:37

I'm more interested in people who don't carry handbags than your bag for life rules OP.

Do all just use your phone and not carry anything else? I'm intrigued and wonder if I can stop having a handbag.

I stopped using a handbag when I fostered teens after a couple of stealing incidents and haven’t used one in 7 years. Everything is on my phone. I do have a couple of small bags for going out if I think I might need cash but I love not having to remember to put stuff in my bag and actually take it with me 🤣

Call me a hypocrite when you don't even know me. What a horrible person you are.
