Wisdom tooth pain advice

Sorry, shamefully posting here for traffic.
I’ve got one of my wisdom teeth coming through. It started hurting yesterday, today is the same except now I’ve got a swollen painful lymph node on that side.
The area isn’t throbbing or debilitating painful but I have taken ipubrofen and numbing gel as it’s painful to eat.

My question is, do I need to get antibiotics or can I just use Corsodyl/ warm salt water etc? This sounds terrible but I really cannot be bothered with the faff of an out of hours dentist appointment!

Sorry - just checked and had my partner check, we don’t think my lymph node is swollen, but definitely sore.

You'll probably need antibiotics - personally I'd get it checked sooner rather than later in case the infection spreads or it becomes even worse.

You don't need to do anything with a wisdom tooth coming through. Just take pain relief and your gum will adjust. If it continues to cause pain for weeks or you're getting food trapped in it, then book an appointment.

That’s the thing - if it was just the gum and that area sore, I’d leave it, but the fact my lymph node is now painful is what’s concerning me in regards to infection. I might ring OOH for a bit of advice.

I've had loads of issues with my wisdom teeth - two have now been removed but two are badly impacted but I need proper surgery at the hospital for those. They've had so many infections over the years and they always start out with a minor niggle and progress to agony within about 48 hours, lol.

Yep - I had the same with another wisdom tooth last year, impacted and infected! Oh the bloody joy! I’ve phoned OOH and left a message so they should phone me back soon I hope, I will update with their advice. I wouldn’t mind going in tomorrow but I can’t be bothered going tonight as I’ve just gotten back from a few nights away and had very little sleep on the return journey!!

Wisdom tooth pain is horrible. It could be impacted and pushing on the one in front. Sometimes the pain resonates all down the face jaw, ear. Definitely use corsodyl and OTC pain relief. If it's still swollen/ it getting worse get a dentists appointment for asap. Even if it's not infected it needs to be looked at.

If there is an infection you need antibiotics. Tooth infections can get into your bloodstream very easily. My daughter had a tooth infection that needed hospital treatment (IV antibiotics) because she wanted to go to bottomless brunch rather than take the antibiotics! By that night she was shaking and got sent straight to A&E to be assessed for sepsis by 111. She was very lucky.

Worth getting checked out, I do know someone who had to get them removed surgically because they weren't coming through properly, best to get seen sooner rather than later because they were on a waiting list for ages in pain

Sparksi · 30/03/2024 23:12

I’d see if you can get in at the dentist. Better safe than sorry if you have pain. I know 111 is a pain but it could be impacted and might not get better without treatment

I sometimes swill a small amount of whisky in my mouth and it stings but then numbs it slightly.

Just be aware that Corsodyl stains your teeth terribly (it did for me years ago anyway).
