How long is a piece of string?
Can't really be answered. Every case is different.

As long as you need and can get a sick note for. I know someone who’s on their 2nd month of being signed off although his parent died in pretty tragic circumstances so I think he’s suffering more than if it had been an expected death after an illness.

I took a week off when my DF died.

PervyMuskrat · 29/03/2024 17:15

I took 2 days off, which in retrospect wasn’t enough, but I needed to be busy. I’d taken random times off in the run up to her death to sit with her in the hospice. I had only been in the job a few months and felt I needed to prove myself. I effectively worked at 80% capacity for a few weeks though as I took time out to arrange the funeral and go to the bank etc with my dad.

As long as you need.

As long as you need (assuming this is you who needs the time off?)

As long as you need.

my dh took a week off, his oldest brother took a day off, his sister took 5 weeks off.

it depends on if you feel ready .

I had 2 days leave but it was before a bank holiday so it was 5 in total.

Birch101 · 29/03/2024 17:20

I had a weeks bereavement leave straight away and another around the time of the funeral followed by 2 weeks AL.

It varies obviously are you organizing and planning the funeral sorting out probate etc, caring for other parent ...

Essentially my company offers a week for close family member followed by an additional week at managers discretion

Having said that a year has now passed and I've accepted the toll it has taken on me and as such may end on sick leave because of this

Hadalifeonce · 29/03/2024 17:21

I took about 3 months. My company were brilliant, full pay and they paid for counselling. But, I do know others who have had to use sick leave beyond 2 weeks.

KnitnNatterAuntie · 29/03/2024 17:24

I was given 3 days compassionate leave which I used for the funeral, the day before & the day after.

A couple of weeks later I took 1 weeks annual leave as my sister came to stay so we could start sorting the house out

It's all extremely personal . . . my friends father died very suddenly from a heart attack and she was off for several weeks. Such an awful shock for her and her mum needed a lot of support
