24m2 studio is an ok size?

Designing a studio for rent. It will be separate but attached to our house. Does 24m2 seem habitable for a single person? Architect wants to go bigger but that is going to cost more so rent would have to be higher than planned.

I'm in Europe, where a 25m2 studio is pretty usual.

My first flat here was exactly this size, and had a bathroom (with bath), small kitchen and the main living/sleeping area. For one person this was perfectly adequate as long as the space was optimally utilised. It helped that the ceiling height was 2.5m, so there was plenty of space to put cupboards up high. Removing the bath and replacing it with a shower cubicle provided room for a washer/dryer in the bathroom, which is where they tend to be situated in these apartments (but which I understand might be against electrical/planning regs in the UK).

The big space-saver was the wall-bed or Murphy Bed - "Schrankbett" in German - which was a full-sized double bed that folded into the wall during the day, but still had a couch for daytime use, the couch automatically folding away under the bed when the bed was lowered.

For one person, as a base for a year or two, a well-planned apartment like this was fine. It was larger than any student flat I ever had, and it meant not having to rent a smaller room in a HMO or share a kitchen and bathroom.

I'm in London and have viewed a few studios recently, none under 32m squared and even they are lingering on the listing sites. Listen to your architect OP and if you are in Dublin be mindful that the next govt may well introduce radical new housing policies and target have-a-go landlords profiting from the miserable shortage.

as a standalone flat you andolutely need to include a washer/dryer (or space for it).
without you might fall foul of planning laws as separate dwelling.

sizewise with a good layout it's possible.
it's basically the size of a double hotel room.

Pls cite the law that you refer to

I didn’t post that but the law is:

S.I. No. 137/2019 - Housing (Standards For Rented Houses) Regulations 2019

I cant understand why more people don't have the ambition to become slum landlords!

Sounds shit.
