To think more entertainment should be on in the afternoons for adults?

I have a disability which means I'm pretty much bed bound by 6pm. When DC were little my whole world opened up as my social life revolved around them and most things are tailored to day time hours.

They're now almost adults and my world has shrunk drastically. There's so much I see advertised that I would love to go to- concerts, plays, comedians, church events etc.

Unless I want to spend the rest of my life attended kids events I feel pretty limited.

I know they have to go with the majority but its actually a bit depressing how little I can do.

I know what you mean but how about festival type events? Cinema? Matinee theatre performances, galleries etc

RampantIvy · 29/03/2024 13:01

How old are you?
Round where I live U3A is very lively and has lots going on in the afternoons.

OutOfTheHouse · 29/03/2024 13:02

There are afternoon raves these days for us old farts who want to be home by 6.

Hankunamatata · 29/03/2024 13:02

There's loads plays/musicals etc that do afternoon performances

Friend joined a disability social group where they do trips or meet ups every week on weekdays. Might be something like that in your area

Mil local church has lots if things during the day. She's a spring chicken just being 60 to most of the attendees but she finds them excellent company. She does craft groups, flower arranging, book club, rambling, day trips to local attractions

I’m going day clubbing soon !

WimpoleHat · 29/03/2024 13:05

I wonder why more theatres don’t add extra matinee performances. It’s struck me over the past, say, 20 years that the midweek matinee has gone from being half empty to being sold out first. Really good way of using the assets/understudies etc as well!

I'm late 40's. I think my retirement years will really suit me in the same way the parenting years did. I'm just stick in the middle at the moment.

I do go to day time stuff as much as possible. I'd just seen another concert that I'd love and it's yet another one that I can't go to. Just having a pity party really.

What area are you in? Ask at your GP surgery about social prescribing and if they have any lists of groups that may interest you.

TroysMammy · 29/03/2024 13:33

There is daytime clubbing near me on a Saturday. It starts at 3pm and finishes at 8pm. I've never been into nightclubs or going to "the disco" type but it's geared to the older person who still wants to boogie but be home and in pjs by 9pm. However there are no kebab shops as the area is too posh.

Rob Beckett and Josh Widdecombe were talking about this on their podcast a while ago. They both have small children and they were wondering if there was a market for matinee comedy.

HummingbirdChandelier · 29/03/2024 13:37

Is it sleep you need or help getting to bed, etc?

Could you go to bed in the day, go out in the evening once in a while?

Lilyhatesjaz · 29/03/2024 14:05

Have you thought of joining a gym. I belong to a council one and they have a lot of very gentle classes in the day such as yoga and meditation and ty chi.
These classes are often followed by coffee in the cafe and are very sociable.

Horsewhisperers · 29/03/2024 14:18

For those that like theatre, there aren't enough matinees. I'm single and don't want to travel home late on public transport so only go to matinees. These are always crowded so I'm sure there's a market for more.
