"There's a plant for every location"?

I'm getting my front driveway re-landscaped, and there is a certain area that gets no sun whatsoever (north-facing, in a recess). Water is an issue too - it is slightly over-hung by the roof, and too far away from our outdoor tap for our lengthy hose to reach. I told the landscaper I didn't want planting in that area, but his design did include planting. He told me that there is always a plant for every location, and also that his tutor at design school taught him x,y,z and therefore that area needs plants. Aibu to stick with my gut and say no to the planting, or should I trust the man with the landscape architecture qualification?

Relevant info: we don't have green fingers, and want low-maintenance.

We've got a very similar area under our kitchen window. Gets maybe an hours direct sun a day in high summer. We've got two Japanese laurels in it and some spreading euonymous. They've survived 25 years and are pretty now maintenance. But honestly I wouldn't care if we ripped them out and flagged over it... Sick to your guns, he's working for you but the other way round.

If you don't want plants there definitely stick to your guns and maybe have gravel/stones with ornamental pots/garden art.

But he's correct I love ferns and hostas for a shady border but there are many more types.
Have to water but a few trips with a watering can does the job, can be lovely just having what I call a leaf texture border.

He's working for you, so if you don't want plants, he should draw up an alternative plan without them. Whether or not there are plants that could live in that area (there probably are) is irrelevant. If he refuses, then I'd find a different landscaper.
