To not eat Easter eggs before Sunday

Having a discussion with husband about Easter traditions. We have different cultural upbringings so my point of view is that traditionally you don’t celebrate Easter and have treats until the Sunday but he always had his chocolate Easter egg on Good Friday. Now we are struggling to agree in how to do it with our kids. They will get a chocolate egg hunt on the Sunday but they already have the big eggs given by grandparents which they can’t wait to eat and my husband says they might as well start eating through and avoid having too much in one go but I am more for waiting. Yesterday after school Easter service the PTA gave all children a small chocolate egg and some children were eating it straight away, mine asked when could they eat theirs and I said wait until Sunday. We had a discussion about lent and training patience but in the end I caved in and let them have it later at home as to be fair we are not religious and don’t really observe lent, but I do feel quite strongly about traditions. When do you and your children all eat chocolate Easter eggs?
yabu - let them eat eggs, it is just chocolate in a funny shape
yanbu - eating chocolate eggs before Easter Sunday is sacrilege

We always did hot cross buns on the Friday and Easter eggs on the Sunday.

TTPD · 28/03/2024 08:31

We do their "main" egg on Sunday, but mini eggs/anything else before. We made a cake with mini eggs as decoration last week, for example, and DD's great grandma gave her a Lindt egg a couple of weeks ago that's been eaten.

Sharptonguedwoman · 28/03/2024 08:37

I think we all live in a confusion of partly followed/remembered/adapted pagan and Christian traditions. Do you eat the egg/not eat the egg? Wait for Easter Sunday? Objectively, does it matter? As long as not too much chocolate is consumed in one go, I wouldn't worry.

PrettyPines · 28/03/2024 08:39

My kids just eat them as they get them, there's surely way too much chocolate to eat on one day anyway. Spread it out before and after 🤷‍♀️

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 28/03/2024 08:39

It was always Easter Sunday when I a child. I’ve given the Gdcs their eggs (they’re going away) but have told them they can’t eat them before Sunday - I doubt they’ll hold to that though!

Dh won’t be getting his egg (which I’ve still got to buy) until Sunday.

mumonthehill · 28/03/2024 08:40

Easter eggs always on Easter Sunday and not before. Although if they were given a small egg from school they could eat it. Hot cross buns on Good Friday. Not set in stone but this was our tradition. When I was a child an easter egg was a real treat and it was so exciting to get one on Easter Sunday morning.

hottchocolate · 28/03/2024 08:42

DH and I eat them whenever (and buy them specifically just to eat as we prefer them over a bar of chocolate) but not in front of DC and we are planning to let them have them on Sunday after an Easter egg hunt (different eggs to those
already gifted that they have seen).

We did a national trust Easter egg hunt last week and let them eat the eggs they won.

either way is fine but you should try to be consistent.

VillageLite · 28/03/2024 08:47

I treat it the same as birthdays and Christmas.
Most presents on the day, but if someone hands you a present beforehand, you open it there and then, and can enjoy it straight away.

Though Good Friday is a special case in our house - no meat, and definitely no chocolate, so I wouldn’t allow Easter eggs on that particular day.

Talipesmum · 28/03/2024 08:55

They get given them on Sunday, so that’s when they can start eating them. But if anyone gives them eggs before Sunday I think they’re fine to start on them. None of us have been fasting so it doesn’t matter.

I’m old enough to remember when you only ever got Hot Cross Buns on Good Friday (or at least we did.). I still remember going very early with my DF to the bakery to get them - we had them for breakfast. They were a massive treat - we so rarely had any cakes or buns from a shop.

'Main' eggs on Easter Sunday but we always had other eggs for the weeks leading up. Easter egg chocolate was always my favourite

Yes, even more when you put traditions from different cultures in the mix! I won’t bore you with the long and quirky story of my own family’s tradition with Easter because I grew up in Spain which at the time was very catholic and none of my classmates knew about the Easter bunny but I had it because we were always influenced by the traditions brought by extended family who lived in Germany so we did things a bit differently from the local tradition but embracing all of it. Our children have only ever lived here but sometimes celebrated Easter abroad and it has not really been much of an issue with waiting in previous years but the conversation this morning made me curious about what most people in this country do! Thank you for all the replies!

Good Friday hot cross buns and fish as main meal. Sunday Easter eggs

MeinKraft · 28/03/2024 09:16

I let mine eat the eggs when they get them if they want, otherwise we end up with a mountain of eggs on Easter Sunday, they eat about 1/4 of one and the rest just sit around taking up space until I eventually melt them down to make buns. My kids aren't that mad about chocolate though.

TheBirdintheCave · 28/03/2024 09:18

@Stopmotion24 I'm from a Catholic family and we only did Easter eggs on Easter Sunday. Eating them early would be like opening Christmas presents before Christmas, just odd to me.

Georgieporgie29 · 28/03/2024 09:23

Growing up we weren’t allowed Easter eggs until the Monday and I have no idea why, I just assumed that was the right day and my dm is no longer around to ask. We have adapted as a family to the Sunday but I actually found it really weird 🤣 that is clearly just a me problem though.

I don’t think I could let the children have their eggs before Sunday though and I have no idea why. It just doesn’t feel right (yes I know how crazy that sounds 🤣)

DrCoconut · 28/03/2024 09:29

Easter eggs were for Easter Sunday onwards when I was growing up. Good Friday and Saturday were sombre and contemplative - we didn't do swimming, cinema etc (religious household). I'm not as strict with my kids but Easter eggs before Easter Sunday feels wrong.

Well interestingly I was looking up the recipe of a traditional bun from my region and it says that traditionally it was eaten on the Monday too!

Yes, my mum always used to go on about how when she was a child there was no fun allowed in holy week before Sunday, all TV was religious films and all radio was religious music or services, no cinema or anything fun either. That was under Franco’s regime, mind you.

Ooh well maybe she was on to something!

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 28/03/2024 13:23

Grew up in a fairly strict Catholic environment too and Lent was observed. Not a hope of a sniff of chocolate before Easter Sunday, the Easter bunny didn't exist and we had one big egg on the day. Not a thing to have lot of gifted chocs from friends and family so it wasn't really an issue.

So to my mind, if you are not particularly observant you can make your own rules. Your discomfort stems from your own upbringing, not the one you are giving your children. I sympathise because as a practicing atheist, I am still uncomfortable with it 😁I do allow the fruits of an easter egg hunt to be eaten on the spot though. Anything from us is held until Easter Sunday in the spirit that a bit of delayed gratification is good for us all.

Februaryfeels · 28/03/2024 13:32

We always roll ours on Easter Sunday.

Then eat them

MaryShelley1818 · 28/03/2024 13:55

I didn't even realise it was a thing until I read this thread! Lol.
We give the children all their presents and eggs from us, family and friends on Good Friday. From a practical point of view we then have all of Easter weekend to enjoy them. By Easter Sunday you're 3/4 of the way through.
