Are these things strange

I'm just wanting some other opinions as to whether people find these things appropriate or not.

So my son will often have a quick drink of water out of the tap in the kitchen instead of getting a cup.

He also will sometimes wash his hands in the kitchen sink using washing up liquid then dry them on the tea towel. This may be after being outside or just after eating or whatever.

Are these things disgusting? My husband seems to think so, I'm struggling to see the problem.

If that's all your husband has to worry about with a close to teenage child then he should be grateful!

Pretty much, he is a good boy.

My DS also drinks from the tap, and he's an adult now. Uses washing up liquid on his hands (farmers do it, according to him!). But yes, we have a hand towel in the kitchen. I tell them off (DH and DS) if they use a tea towel instead.

Janpoppy · 27/03/2024 20:50

Now I'm typing this I wonder if this seems OTT to most people...

I've always had hand soap and a hand towel in the kitchen.

Tbh I don't like anyone washing hands in the kitchen sink if their hands are muddy or very dirty from non-cooking activity.

Newuser75 · 27/03/2024 20:51

Interesting! Maybe I should put a hand towel in the kitchen then for everyone's sanity!

Not good for me. How old is he?

Perhaps he picked up these habits from your husband?

I hope he won't do this if he ever gets a job in a restaurant!

wash his hands? I'd be happy that he did wash his hands

ExcitingRicotta · 27/03/2024 20:59

Oh my god he washes his hands and drinks tap water?!?! Get rid of him.

bloodyeffinnora · 27/03/2024 21:00

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/03/2024 20:33

I think you should stop him doing it and explain why it is not pleasant.

Probably best not to let him see Gordon Ramsey in one of his TV programmes as there is a risk he could go really go overboard!

stop him doing what,, he's washing his hands with fairy liquid and drinking from the tap, so what? I'm sure he hasn't got his mouth wrapped around the tap

Newuser75 · 27/03/2024 21:01

@ExcitingRicotta 😂😂. Which one? The son or the husband 😂

ExcitingRicotta · 27/03/2024 21:02

@Newuser75 🤣 definitely keep the son. Hope mine keeps himself clean and hydrated at the same age!

NearlyBritishSummertimeYay · 27/03/2024 21:04

As long as he's drinking from the flow of the water and not putting the tap in his mouth I couldn't get airated by it, as long as he's not leaving a right mess.

i have a bar of soap in a dish by the sink, kids are apt to waste a lot of fairy if they use that & it dries my hands out.

but Tea Towel. NO, absolutely not. Not here anyway. I go through a few a day anyway, but they're only used for clean things & not hands, especially not children's hands!

How can you not have 'heard of' having a hand towel in the kitchen.

id rather people didn't use the kitchen sink for hand washing (except when cooking) but no utility room here & the bathrooms are not practical, but if I'm cooking then off they trek!!

so it's ok to hand wash if you're cooking but not any other time, what's the difference 🤔 its a hand wash whatever

Newuser75 · 27/03/2024 21:07

@NearlyBritishSummertimeYay I've never heard of hand towels in a kitchen because literally every house that I've been in hasn't had one!

I didn't know that people did that but as they say you learn something new every day!

I will put a hand towel in the kitchen tomorrow and instruct my son to use it !

OP posts:
Newuser75 · 27/03/2024 21:09

@bloodyeffinnora yes I agree, he doesn't wash his hands in the kitchen sink after he has been to the toilet. It's just before or after he is eating.

OP posts:
Sheepcup · 27/03/2024 21:13

The tap is normal imo. Really you should have a seperate hand towel in the kitchen, but I don't and change the tea towel regularly, I.e multiple times a day.

You've actually done a towel check in every house you've ever been in?

Never mind drinking water or using washing up liquid that is frankly weird and bordering in obsessive, why on earth would you be making a point of doing that?

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 27/03/2024 21:17

I did the drinking from the kitchen tap when I was a kid, not an issue at all. Nor is the hand washing, can you just put a hand wash in the kitchen so he uses that rather than washing up liquid? Doesn't everyone have hand wash in their kitchen?

Allfur · 27/03/2024 21:18

I don't understand the hand towel thing at all, what's wrong with a tea towel, it's still a bit of fabric, and the boys hands are clean surely?

Newuser75 · 27/03/2024 21:19

We have hand wash in the kitchen! He just grabs the washing up liquid. I don't know why.

And no of course I don't go into everyone house looking for towels 🙈. Goodness me. Just when I have been in other peoples houses I haven't noticed hand towels in their kitchens!

BobbyBiscuits · 27/03/2024 22:03

Washing hands with w/up liquid in the kitchen sink if that's the nearest place from outside is normal. And efficient.

If you worked in a restaurant, as one person said, there's a hand washing sink, and hand washing generally is a great habit for food workers.

Drinking straight from the tap isn't the best, as obviously you could catch something from the tap and it's impolite at others homes/publicly. But saying it's disgusting is a bit of a stretch!

@Allfur

people (especially children!) don't wash their hands properly (hence needing hand washing instructions through Covid)) & so, no, it's not ok to dry them on a tea towel unless it's immediately put in the wash.

yes they're both fabric, but I wouldn't use my bath towel to dry the dishes.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 27/03/2024 22:06

Perfectly normal, saves washing up a hundred glasses, although maybe a water bottle might be an idea. The water fountains at school were minging though, so a tap at home is far superior!

Newuser75 · 27/03/2024 20:37

@PuttingDownRoots there is hand soap in the kitchen but no separate hand towel. Just tea towels. I didn't know people had actual hand towels in their kitchens!

I’ve never seen a hand towel in a kitchen!
