To not have realised that my pension age has gone up?

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 27/03/2024 18:51

I'm 45, 46 this year. Checked online 2 years ago and my state pension age was 67, which I thought was bad enough, for some reason checked again today and it's gone up to 68!!

I knew that the govt were thinking of doing this but I have no recollection of being told it had actually happened. This affects my work pension which I now can't take until 68 too as it aligns to state pension age.

Annoyingly, my brother who is 2 years older can still retire at 67!
Have I missed some huge public announcement?

? It hasn't been changed yet. They're talking about it though.

Or have I missed something too.

Swoopy · 27/03/2024 18:54

Yes it’s going up in 2040-something. They’re talking about bringing that forward too- mine is currently 67 but I’m planning for 68 just in case.

The government website www.gov.uk/state-pension-age says that mine is now in 2046 when I am 68. Can't find any legislation that says they have actually changed it though!!

The website definitely says that. My sister born 1975 retires at 67, people born 1978 retire at 68.

I haven't heard anything about this. What does Martin Lewis say?

Spendonsend · 27/03/2024 18:59

Yes mine says 68 too.
And my personal pension is linked to state retirement too. Which is annoying as it gets pushed older and older.

IIdentifyAsInnocent · 27/03/2024 19:00

That says it hasn't been finalised, so why are the government telling me it is later for me? According to their Web pages anyone born after 5th April 1978 will retire at 68!!!

I'm laughing at the thought of being in prison til I'm 68!

TiredCatLady · 27/03/2024 19:01

Last I saw they were thinking of raising it further to 71 or something.

I’m a few years younger than you and honestly not expecting to get a state pension at all. I think the drops in NI will be wheeled out as justification for tapering it off for anyone Gen X or later.

Whattodowithit88 · 27/03/2024 19:01

This is what makes me worry about struggling now to save for a pension because as it gets higher abd higher so much more chance I’ll be dead before anyway!

Im currently 38, I have a horrible feeling it will be 75 by the time it comes to me retiring

I'm laughing at the thought of lifting patients down stairs and jumping up and sown on their chest at 68

Probably be 75 by the time we retire. I'm fully expecting it to go up even more in years to come.

dreamfield · 27/03/2024 19:03

Oh, well now I'm really depressed 😭

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 27/03/2024 19:05

I'm going to be wheeling my zimmer frame into my classroom at the age of 68 trying to teach when my body and brain is saying no!

SheepAndSword · 27/03/2024 19:05

I don't think life expectancy is going up THAT much that people will get their pension aged 70+?

MrsMurphyIWish · 27/03/2024 19:05

I’m 45 and a teacher - I’m sure teenagers will be listening to me at 68!

I’m not so much bothered about the state pension but the Teachers Pension can not be claimed now until state pension age. I guess there will be loads us in ill health working or on benefits.

Isn't that the point?

Hedjwitch · 27/03/2024 19:06

I'm 60 and struggling to keep working full time. There is no way i will be able to work.until I'm 67. I have a small private pension but not enough to live on so am desperately trying to save as much as I can. Cant sell and downsize as only live in a small upstairs flat. Dreading the future. Might have had a small inheritance from mum but she has gone inyo care now and her house will be sold to pay the eye watering care home fees.

Scary!!

SpinyNorma · 27/03/2024 19:08

Without hyperbole, I would genuinely be amazed if the state pension age is still as low as 68 for you or your brother by the mid-2040s and wouldn't be completely surprised if the state pension wasn't a thing as we know it.

FilthyforFirth · 27/03/2024 19:08

How old are you? I'm 39 and feel like I've known for a while it was 68. Though I assume the money will have run out by the time I get there and the state pension will be abolished...

I'm putting as much as I can into my work one!

Just checked on the state pension calculator. You're right. I don't remember a decision being definitively made, either.

Heartbreaktuna · 27/03/2024 19:10

I don't think it will go higher than 68. But I do think it will become means tested. Whether you've paid into it or not!

FilthyforFirth · 27/03/2024 19:10

Sorry you gave your age, doh!

StedeBonnet · 27/03/2024 19:11

I feel like I knew this had been proposed a while ago. But yes as people say, I'll be amazed if it doesn't go up again over the next 24 years (for me.)
