Asda not opening checkout tills

About 8pm. Had a trolley full of stuff. There was a single checkout open when I entered. Went there to pay and it is closed with a sign saying in the evening there maybe be times when checkout is closed and you should use self scan. Two staff chatting ten meters away. I ask if they can open the till. They said 'sorry, no we don't have enough staff".

I go to self service. About 4 times the machine stopped and had to wait for the same staff to come over and unlock it. I was only a quarter of the way through my trolley. Justly left it there, walked out and said to the two staff, sorry I am leaving it, it's too much hassle.

Unreasonable? Plus, everyone saw this coming 10 years ago when it was 'we will always have at least one checkout open' then ' just ask and we will open one'.

Went to Aldi in the end but I can see them going the same way.

I am healthy by the way and middle aged. Would they have opened a till if I was elderly? Or obviously disabled but then not all disabilities are visible of course.

@Noyesnoyes Yes I think that over half are like me. I know plenty of friends who do an alcohol delivery online when there are offers. Get 12 bottles delivered and a good discount.
That study you linked to said 16% buy all or most online. So 2.3% all online, the rest most. The rest are occasional online shoppers.
Pre pandemic the buy all or most online was 6^ so it has jumped a lot. But the vast majority still buy their groceries in store.
I bought everything online during the pandemic. But I went back in store because of issues with substitutions, quality and higher pricing of groceries online compared to in store.

To much info for me! But buying everything online would be difficult for those little mid week shops, as you have to have a minimum spend.

Lots of my friends do online shopping for their main shop, as do I, using the shops for mid week shops, which vary in size.

I buy all the routine stuff online once a week, usually on a Tuesday from Tesco, I have after 3pm delivery saver and then do a basket top up shop in store in Waitrose or M&S for the weekend so I can add some tasty titbits as well, without being sidetracked by having to buy tins and toilet rolls. I would say I was in the 16% who buy most online but not all.

I don't have hardly any missing or substituted early in the week but I had to get a Friday online shop last week because of coming back from holiday and there were loads missing or substituted, I don't know if this is usual.

My Morrisons shop comes from a warehouse, don't know if this is relevant but I have hardly any subs.

BobnLen · 27/03/2024 16:55

@Noyesnoyes I thing it is better if it comes from a warehouse because they would hold more stock, I have heard the same with Ocado. Mine comes from a medium size Tesco shop.

I think it was wrong of you to just abandon a trolley full of shopping which someone will have to put back. Surely it would have taken you much longer to go on and do a full shop at another supermarket. 🤔

And the fact that the cost of wastage means less profit for providing staff pay and keeping customer costs down.

Extremely shortsighted!

It amazes me on MN, someone walks out with a pound loaf of bread by accident and doesn't offer to go back and pay, it's all about that's why prices are high blah blah, staff get poorly paid.

Someone abandons a trolley with some perishables I am sure in it, that's fine because you're making a demo! Those costs are just fine.....

If you like 🙄 !

Whatever makes you happy 😃

OriginalStarWars · 27/03/2024 17:24

It is not about whatever makes me happy. It is statistics.

Ok that's great!

I'm still not happy ultimately paying for OPs tantrum!

@Noyesnoyes there's a tiny village near my mum that still has a serviced petrol station, the old guy comes out & fills up the car for you but you still have to go in if paying by card.

But that's now.......... not what I am talking about?

It never used to be like that, that's what I'm
saying.... the service has changed!
