Should international sports captains be upstanding people

Naming no actual names, but I've just noticed that a Captain of an International team is a serial cheater. I think this is appalling that someone of such influence is a morally dubious character.

Though should captaincy just relate to sporting prowess and not life off the court/field/course?

Interested to hear what others who are more able to express their thoughts and opinions think.

YABU captaincy should be based on sports related behaviour only

YANBU captains should be all round respectable people

I mean, I don't think it should be a rapist or anything. But honestly I'd guess a huge majority of professional sportsmen cheat or have some other flaw so major crime, racism/sexism etc aside it's mostly going to be because of their value as an athlete to the team.

No. Everyone’s professional opportunities should be based on their professional merit, not other people’s assessments of their morality or righteousness. How anyone conducts their personal lives is for their family and friends to take issue with, if they wish to.

Morality... its difficult to police. Would for example, you be ok for a female captain to lose her position because she once had an abortion? What about having children while unmarried? Morals vary.

Criminal behaviour... this is easier. They may not be able to get visas for example. Football teams have come under criticism with players accused of rape.

They’re chosen for their ability to lead and motivate their team. They’re not meant to be some kind of national mascot for fidelity.

I think how they act on the pitch is more important. Do they lead? Do the dive? Do they abuse the ref?

If what they do off the pitch is illegal, then I agree. Being a serial cheater, none of my business. Abusing animals, drink driving - very much my business.

Do you accept your employers fully scrutinising your sex life before they determine your career progression, OP?
