to pull out of interview because I'm not prepared?

I was offered a job interview on Friday, for tomorrow morning. It feels really short notice. I've been away with friends a weekend for my son's birthday. It just wasn't something I could cancel. The job is quite different to what I'm doing now, but is internal. I just don't feel prepared at all. I crammed on Saturday night when the kids were in bed and this evening. I've been going through mock questions and I'm just stumbling over my words and tripping over myself. I feel so unprepared. I really want the job but I feel so nervous and sick about tomorrow.

WIBU to pull out now? Or just go for it, but risk embarrassing myself?

@MaddenA oh no, what happened?!

I hope it didn’t go as badly as you think it did and you get offered the job 🤞

Sorry to hear that, but I’m not sure what their thought process is that 2 non working days is enough for them to see the potential in prospective employees.

And, as is often said, do you want to work for people who do that? If you got the job what else would they spring on you with no warning?

My best advice is try and relax a bit before the interview. You can never be 100% prepared. If you don’t know the answers don’t take it badly just put it down to experience for next time. Nerves can be a big thing, a key tip is always pause slightly to take a breath before answer big questions. For example if they ask you to name a time when you had had to do a task you found hard etc say something like in my current role I’ve been fortunate to be able to work on a number of tasks.. pause.. one occasion that comes to mind.. etc

Sorry to hear that OP
My last 3 job interviews.

  1. Came out feeling really elated thinking it went really well - Didn't get the job.
  2. Came out, burst into tears, thought I was awful - Got the job.
  3. Came out, avoided any unknown numbers for a week as couldn't face the terrible feedback when they delivered the bad news.
-Got the job.

You just never know 😃
PS Be kind to yourself

OP, from someone who does the interviews for our team, I have NEVER thought badly of an applicant who fluffed their answers or generally just had a torrid time.

We've all been to interviews where you want the ground to swallow you up, so I just feel a bit of sympathy as the interviewer.

It takes some bravery to put yourself out there and apply for an internal position, you should be proud you tried and then move on.

Hereyoume · 25/03/2024 17:12

I'd be careful OP.

I know some well intentiones posters are saying to just go for it. However, if this is an internal position and you plan on staying with the orginisation, you may want to cancell.

Turning up to an interview, unprepared and consequently making a mess of it will reflect very badly on your reputation. You may just scupper your chances of ever getting a promotion if you become known as "that interview".

If I wasn't ready for an interview, I wouldn't attend at all.

Cheers for this 🤣

Yes, not sure what the point of that comment is @Hereyoume when the interview was today and @MaddenA has already said she didn't feel it had gone well.

Talk about kicking someone when they are down!

I doubt it was as bad as you think @MaddenA I would ask for feedback whatever the outcome.
