[hmm] Baby Food and John Lewis's Money Making Scheme

I went to the Brasserie in John Lewis in Cambridge today and, as well as ordering our own food, I did as I usually do and asked them if they could put my home-made baby food in the microwave for 45 seconds so I could feed my baby.

The woman said that for Health and Safety reasons this was not possible but that they did, luckily, sell their own baby food.

She produced a range of Hipp Organic jars.

So they can heat up THIS baby food, after I've bought it of course, but not mine?

Making money being disguised as Health and Safety fears?

For this reason, and needless to say, I will be boycotting this restaurant from now on.

ivykaty, it doesn't have to be legislation, if those rules are part of their own health and safety policy then all employees must follow it and management have a right to put whatever stipulations they like (within the law) into their own policies if they feel it will cover them from unnecessary law suits.

I don't get why people get so het up about this. At the end of the day they are businesses, not public srvices, they don't have to provide anything for their customers that they don't want to.

ivykaty44 · 28/03/2008 13:37

They dont need customers then? Not much of a business without them?

OverMyDeadBody · 28/03/2008 13:46

They don't need every single possible customer out there, let's put it that way!

Those cafes in department stores are always busy, so it obviously doesn't put most customers off.

Of all the places to criticise for being poor with children I would not pick John Lewis. They are fantastic and offer the kind of help you should get everywhere. I'll get on my high horse if you are nasty about them.
I always thought they did free jars anyway.

uberalice · 28/03/2008 14:15

Agree with Thing1. They do free jars if you're buying an adult meal.

Tutter · 28/03/2008 14:17

they gave me ds2's jar for nowt

i was very impressed

assumed it was a special thing for special me

was quite disappointed to learns it was standard policy

Im confused though;
They will give you some hot water to heat up the Hipp baby jars, on your table,
BUT
they wont give you some hot water for some of your own food??

I agree with getting them used to having it cold. My ds even drank milk in a bottle that had been in an insulated bottle holder, with an ice pack. It was probably about 2 degrees! (It only happened once - we wernt in a position to be able to warm it up.) But after a couple of months old, it was only ever room temperature, not warm. It saved a lot of hassle at night, hanging around waiting for the milk to get warm.
He never had jars heated up if we were out either.

SmugColditz · 28/03/2008 14:47

No, they will not give you the hot water to heat your own baby food or thir baby food. They will take the food IF it is prepacked and heat it either on or behind the counter. And I do agree with thw poster who said that shops and cafes are not a public service, and also that it is not up to them to organise themselves to compensate for your desire not to use your own kitchen to heat your own food.

I found the best food for being out and about was a banana. It didn't matter to me if it wasn't a full well rounded meal if it was one meal then a banana did (followed by a feed). Nice and portable and easily mushabl.

JingleyJen · 28/03/2008 14:49

how was the new shopping center? we havent been in yet but have heard it doesn't live up to the hype..

hifi · 28/03/2008 15:53

everybody is up for suing everone these days i dont blame them, cant have it all ways.

Fullmoonfiend · 28/03/2008 15:57

agree w/r banana! think we over did them though when out and about. DS1 goes green if you show him a banana now (10 years on)
