There is so much misinformation around infant feeding that is affecting breastfeeding in this country. Unfortunately, this is being massively parroted on mumsnet. Please can misinformation around infant feeding be deleted?

In the past week I have seen the following comments parroted:

”if you give a bottle it will ruin your breastfeeding journey”? (One bottle! No it won’t!) Why would you prefer this to someone giving one bottle then having an excellent breastfeeding journey? What do you get from this lie? You know the baby and mum will be fine so why do you hate that one bottle of formula so much??? Imagine the effect on first time mums of reading this all the time….

“Formula feeding is “pumping them full of formula into submission”… there are no words….

People are giving their opinions. They might be driven by emotion but they are still opinions.
Adults needs to learn to discern what is fact and what is opinion. Rather than someone taking it upon themselves to be an arbiter of truth so they can control the opinions others hear.
As with everything else, with breastfeeding confirmation bias usually applies. People side with the opinions closest to their own, and repeat them as fact.
My SIL said she was so put off by her friend constantly telling her the advantages of breastfeeding that it put her off the the idea completely. In truth she had never been interested in breastfeeding but this was a handy reason to tell people. If she wanted to try she would have enjoyed the enthusiasm.
I sympathize with your frustration but curtailing free speech and feeling that you or another person/ group should be able to decide what we are allowed to say about breastfeeding is unreasonable.

It feels like the most emotive and sensitive subject to many people. I worked on an infant feeding study which was UK wide, and some women were furious at even being asked anonymously how they feed their baby.
People need to express their feelings, it doesn't mean it's factual or applies to all.
I think in this instance the need to feel your own decision is the right one can lead to people reacting so strongly.
As long as the baby is being fed that's all that matters in my view.
