To think you can’t just cut someone’s bushes down?

We’ve been out this morning and come home to all the greenary that made the back of our house private gone and the fence hanging off.

Weve been round the back and there is a wall sperating the two properties so even if it was growing onto their fence there is no need to have touched our part. No one has been round to speak to us.

Picture one is our view before. Picture two now and the others is the mess in our graden plus the space around the back.

Where we stand with this and what would you expect them to do.

If it’s relevant, ours is private, the house at the back is housing association and empty.

Sometime with Ivy and other creepers starts in one garden goes over fence and roots in another garden.

Previous owners planted Virginia creeper - I tired once we moved in to get rid as leaves were a pain in late Autumn cut it all back it come back over from next door(older neighbour though does get a gardener in - ) and it's just come back over and reset itself in our garden. Garden we back onto Ivy trying to do the same with our garden as well.

If most of the roots are other side it's likely theirs - I'd look at either quick growing creepers or some other privacy options and fence may have been held up by Ivy but on its last legs anyway.

You can get expandable trellis with fake plants for instant privacy. Whether a permanent or temporary measure.

Don't get fake ivy! After a couple of years it starts to perish and you end up with bits of green fabric and plastic everywhere. A neighbour put some up and I spend ages picking it out of flowerbeds, it's horrendous.

If it was yours it would be obvious as it would be growing in your garden.

The part circled in the photo is between the two gardens.
There is our fence, some space, a wall, space then their fence.
It appears the roots maybe between our fence and wall.

It’s ivy. They have done you a favour really but it will grow back. As others have said, repair the trellis and get some more attractive climbers that aren’t so invasive. Any garden centre will help you choose something.

Zyq · 23/03/2024 17:01

You could restore your privacy very quickly by putting some sort of covering on the trellis until you get something else to grow up it.

Floralnomad · 23/03/2024 17:03

Buy some big pots and put bamboo in them against the fence to create some privacy , or one of those sail things at the right angle.

Where does your deeds end? As an example we have the air space behind our back fence marked as our property on our deeds.

I stapled dark grey shade netting to the back of our trellis to provide privacy.

lookwhatyoudidthere · 23/03/2024 17:13

Both shots look as though no one lives/gardens there. You need some strong climbers - ideally evergreen- planted your side of the fence. Also the trellis/fencing needs replacing. I'd get the latter sorted first.

hellsBells246 · 23/03/2024 17:15

Well, the fence didn't look great before with all that ivy growing on it so maybe they have done you a favour. You still have ivy growing on your side. You could either get some big pots and plant them with eg bamboo or dig a border in front of the fence and plant some quick-growing shrubs. Is the trellis yours? If not, you might like to add trellis to your side too.

NotQuiteNorma · 23/03/2024 17:18

Seems pretty clear this was not your bush but it's done now anyway. If it's growing from a gap between the two boundaries then it probably won't have belonged to either. There are lots of very fast growing climbers that will fill the space quickly and give you back dome privacy. Google for some ideas on fast growing ones.

HornyHornersPinger · 23/03/2024 17:19

No no no, they definitely can't do that!! You're homeowners and they're just renters, who the hell do they think they are!?

🙄

Read the post. The property is empty. The housing association who own it did it, and yes they can if it's rooted their side.

YOU read my post.
And take notice of the sarcasm this time.

MyMotherMyDogAndClowns · 23/03/2024 17:24

You definitely don’t want uncontrolled ivy growing over your fence or the wall - it will weigh too heavily for the trellis and break it, and grow into the mortar and undermine the wall and cause it to fall down. If you want a nice climber there for privacy, you need to kill off the ivy and start again. Your trellis will have been damaged over the course of the period in which the ivy has got out of control - it will be a self seeded weed, and the fact of it growing over your trellis has caused the damage which has now been revealed, not its removal.

Absolutely nothing to do with that at all. The only reason I mentioned it was if people thought it was wrong it would be HA I would need to speak to rather than people in the property (owned or not).

OP posts:
OhmygodDont · 23/03/2024 17:29

I totally missed the fact it was the HA that did it not a tenant or homeowner haha

HA will of seen it as a mess to be cleared and filled it all of the fence of their property.

Its also rather likely the HA own the strip
of land between the houses.

BobbyBiscuits · 23/03/2024 17:31

The bushes they cut look like they are 'their' bushes? The ivy from your side is still in tact. In that respect I think they haven't done anything wrong. I'm guessing they're preparing it for new occupants so just hope they're not noisy!
Plant some big bushes on your side is the only solution I think.

soupfiend · 23/03/2024 17:36

You need to grow a buddlia, it will be 9 foot before you know it

I havent read the whole thread but I think others have pointed out the plant wasnt yours.

It’s not just the house though. Behind our fence is the street and a drive (not belonging to that house). The street is much higher up so people stood in the street / getting in their cars are now in direct view.

FenceFiasco2000 · 23/03/2024 18:01

Anyway, most people don’t think it was wrong so looks like we’re going to have to suck it up and find something to sort it out even though it’s been like that for the whole 8 years we’ve lived here.

Floralnomad · 23/03/2024 18:03

They’ve done you a favour in the longer term @FenceFiasco2000 as it really did look a state and now you can find a more attractive solution .

FenceFiasco2000 · 23/03/2024 18:09

This is the view now from standing in the street behind.
Previously our decking area was hidden unless you came and literally looked over the fence.

Get the plastic ivy screens.

OhmygodDont · 23/03/2024 18:11

So the Ha have cleared land they / the council own. Still not getting why you think they cannot. Unless it’s plants within your boundary they don’t have to be kept just because you want privacy.

You need to do something inside your fence.
