Can I build back up my tolerance for wine

I can't drink wine any more it gives me a massive headache that lasts all evening and the next day. I used to love wine. Am going to a wedding in france in the summer on my own and I don't know anyone . They even arranged a trip to a vineyard . I love wine. Do you think you can build back up your tolerance . Say if I had a little every night . Like Medicine Confusedhas anyone been successful in being able to drink again after menopause which I think is something to do with it

I don't think thats very sensible. I'd be concerned about it being an allergy you've developed to something in the wine and look into exploring what that may be.

I think if it's making you that sick you really should take that as a sign. If you are determined to go to this vineyard trip, just make sure you drink at least a glass or 2 of water between alcoholic drinks and eat little and often.

I guess try and drink half a glass with dinner before you're going and see if it banjaxes you for the next day. If you are in bed sick on holiday you'll regret it. So it might just be a case of tasting the wine only rather than drinking full glasses.

I really don’t think you can. Does drinking white wine rather than red make a difference?

Tropicalsunshine · 23/03/2024 13:32

This has happened to me and many of my friends at menopause.
Funnily enough it's not mentioned or studied that much.
I did read that there's a enzyme needed to break down one of the chemicals and we lose the enzyme as we age. The effect is worse with red wine and especially expensive red where the grapes have had more sun!
I can drink white now but not red- is white a bit better?

I can't drink what I used to drink without being ill now I'm older but I do find there's a big connection between what I'm eating at the time. If my diet is full of carbs I can generally tolerate a lot more than when I'm eating healthily. My advice is to eat ALL the food.

Munchyseeds2 · 23/03/2024 13:35

I can't drink very much at all since the menopause...I don't think it's a bad thing really!

spanieleyes22 · 23/03/2024 13:46

I don't want to get drunk I just miss the little bit of confidence a glass of wine gives you . That's interesting about the red wine maybe I'll try some white . Good about the carbs! Though I had a small glass of Prosecco on Xmas day and suffered for the rest of the day. Despite all the roast potatoes lol

It'd be better to work on not needing the Dutch courage?

True. I don't know if I will ever be comfortable in a group where I don't know anyone tho

Could you learn how to taste wine without drinking ? Like a professional? Then you can experience the wine tasting at the vineyard without needing to drink wine itself

That's a good idea. I'd love to be able to have a couple of glasses wit the meals . It's a 3-4 day thing

Nope lol and I've tried!! Mine is so bad now I had bucks fizz and still got the dreaded headache about an hour afterwards 😫 2 days of feeling really low, migraine and fatigue for half a bottle of bloody bucks fizz!

SleepingisanArt · 23/03/2024 15:42

It will be the artificial sulphates and preservatives in the wine which are triggering your headaches. If you can eat grapes without getting a headache then you should give organic wine a try. It isn't allowed to contain artificial ingredients so the sulphates in it are those which occur naturally in the grape skin. Organic wine can be more expensive but you will be drinking it for pleasure not to get drunk - more a quality rather than quantity thing.
