So I’ve just started my period. Haven’t had one in five years because they were horrific! Bled through everything, had to use waterproof sheets at night. Periods regularly didn’t stop for months on end leaving me severely anaemic. Also, I was awful when I was on, very emotional, got the rage about everything and completely exhausted. 5 years ago I finally got a female doctor who immediately put me on the pill and I haven’t had a period since. It’s been heaven! Except this morning I’ve come on. Stomach hurts, bleeding, period poops, the lot. I go on holiday on Monday with the kids. Long awaited beach/pool holiday so lots of swimming involved. I can’t swim when I’m on, tampons aren’t effective enough. I’m devastated. It’s just me and my young kids, they can’t swim without me and I can’t swim right now.

I’ve got three choices that I can think of-

  1. I’ve got some out of date northisterone that I could use? Used it loads In the past to stop when my periods just keep going
  2. can I take extras of the pill to try and make it work again?
  3. the obvious choice and the one I’ll be doing is that I’ll try and get a doctors appointment first thing on Monday morning but we are supposed to leave first thing Monday and doctors appointments are a nightmare to get
  4. cry

Can anyone suggest anything that might help? Do pharmacies prescribe northisterone?

when I was getting close to menopause I had some really heavy periods, of course when I was on sun holidays. I did find that If I wore a tampon in the pool, I needed to stick the string inside as well. The string acts a a wick in water..not pleasant and very embarrassing. Good Luck . Hope you find a solution

Can you get to a pharmacy OP? Google which ones are still open by you. Most of them where I live shut at 12 on a Saturday but one has to stay open. A pharmacist should be able to give you something. You would be amazed at what they can prescribe now. Though I think they have always being able to prescribe the morning after pill? Anyway, that's what I would do. Good luck.
Edited to add, I would probably take the out of date ones first but understand if you would rather not

Was in the same boat as you having booked weekend away last year. My periods are as you describe (chronic anaemia the lot). I didn’t have enough time to get northisterone prescribed either. I used some out of date ones I had at the back of the cupboard. They worked fine, stopped the bleeding gave me no ill effects.

Have you ran out of your contraceptive pill? I take mine continuously so never have periods, not sure if you do as well or if you just don’t usually get withdrawal bleeds?

Pharmacists can now prescribe contraceptive pills so see if there’s any open over the weekend near you or first thing Monday? For me they normally take 2-3 days to stop the bleed but they also slow it down so that should be helpful.

However, if you do take it consistently and are bleeding without stopping the pill then I’d see a doctor asap.

Sorry to hear that. I'm 40's with very large fibroids so my periods are endless with massive blood loss, I used to need to change my tampon every hour and wore a pad too (that's a whole box of tampons per period!). two years ago I discovered moon cups and that was a game changer. They are made of silicone, some are hard, some more softer and some SUPER soft. I have a medium soft so it's very comfortable and easy to insert. I remove them every night when I'm in the shower, clean then insert it again till next day. I feel they're more comfortable than a tampon, and you will save a lot of money because they're like 20 bucks and last like 5 years. I'm a fan. I swim and do all type of sports while wearing it by the way.

Thanks for all the advice. I’ve contacted Asda online pharmacy (I’ve used before) but not got a response yet. I’ll try the pharmacy tomorrow and doctor on Monday if all else fails. I am overweight so I’ll try the doubling up on pills. I’m on the constant ones where I take one a day every day and I’ve not had a period since the day I started taking them, so I’ll make sure to see a GP when I’m back from holiday

thank you to everyone who suggested period swim wear, I’ve ordered some now which will arrive tomorrow, just hope they fit under my swimsuit!

to those who suggested mooncups- I’ve never managed to get them to work? I don’t know why but they just don’t seem to fit right and they’re not comfortable at all!

If you had written a more specific title you would probably attract more tailored and helpful replies. All these ‘wtf do I do’ without specifying what the problem is is counterproductive and seems to crop up on here 3 times a day.

Also for mooncup, I found that folding them slightly in half and then crouching (i do in the shower) sort of sitting position so you have easy access and then you can fiddle about if necessary to get it in. You also need correct size (vaginal birth or not) to get a snug fit. I find it's easiest to do in a shower at the start so you don't mind getting your fingers a bit bloody etc

The replies are perfectly helpful, with the exception of your own.

I used period swimwear in a waterpark in Florida for a whole day, in and out of water from 10 till 5, and had no issues. I'm a big fan!

But your reply has been so helpful? In fact, everyone has been helpful and kind except you?
