Private Health Insurance - so confusing!

Posting in AIBU for traffic - sorry!

I have finally gotten around to look at private health insurance and I think decided on one. What I can't figure out is:

  • With the no-claims bonus, having some excess may reduce long-term payments, i.e. you only go down levels after a certain claim threshold and the excess payments don't count towards that. My preference would be to go for £0 excess but is that a stupid beginner's mistake?
  • Is there any advantage to have London hospitals included? We are in Scotland but I wondered if there is any specialised treatment we wouldn't be able to get up here if worst came to worst.

I couldn't get an answer to the second Q - obviously the first one will depend on how often and for how much we claim but it would still be interesting to hear people's experience.

Thanks very much in advance!

@SoConfusedAbout Hello, Insurance is a minefield isn't it?! Which insurer did you narrow it down too?

Regarding Excess, depending how much it brings it down by i'd look at both £0 Excess, £100 and £250 per policy year. This would give you the best overall idea of savings. PNCD is advisable, this means should you make a claim your NCD would remain the same, it would be removed at renewal and you can again further down the road.

Regarding the hospital choice, having London care on the policy can significantly increase the monthly premium but there are ways for a broker to get that cost down. Personally if you live in Scotland there isn't anything a London hospital can offer that you can't get in Scotland.
