To want to take my son to be seen by someone even though its probably "just a virus"?

not covid - done a few tests

I started with some horrid illness at the end of last week. Muscle weakness, achey all over, hideous phlegmy cough, nausea, sleeping all day etc.. ive actually never been as poorly and only yesterday starting to feel more normal.

My son had a bit of a runny nose all week but seemed fine so i hoped he'd gotten away with it. All week he's had no temperature, no cough, not unhappy, weeing and eating well still etc.. and nursery had said he was happy all day there.

He is 3yo.

Yesterday they called and said he had gone down hill in the afternoon and wasn't well.

I got him home and he's just taken a nosedive from how he was all week. He fell asleep on the sofa and has barely been awake since. He keeps having high temps of 40 which calpol and nurpfen barely seem to shift if at all. He won't drink although I did manage to get him to eat an ice lolly last night, his eyes are red and puffy when he is awake.

He's been asleep with me all night and woke up about an hour ago in what I presume was a fever induced hallucination of some sort as he was screaming about pizza of all things saying to go away. I tried to cuddle him but he was SO hot, like it was making me sweat just being near him. I've given him more medication and he's back to sleep now but it's not seemingly touching the temp and he's breathing quite fast and just murmuring to himself in his sleep and coughing.

I feel so awful for him I don't know what to do. When he was about 1 he did contract bronch and was admitted to hospital with it for a number of days and since then he does get things badly on his chest.

Should I just keep trying the calpol / nurofen or should I try and find an OOH for him? I know they will probably say just a virus but he's so unwell 😢

Insist they do bloods when you go in. Don't let them fob you off

Not drinking, hallucinations, high temp that you’re struggling to get down - he needs to be seen.

Just keep going with the medications and sips of fluid. Watch for rashes, and his wee output.

Hugely bad advice! A child that isn’t awake/not reusable/sleeping or unconscious all day and breathing quickly and hallucinating?
of course they need seeing today!

Why? What blood tests does he absolutely need?

Flu can cause such symptoms. When I was about 5 I had flu with a very high fever and hallucinations. It was very scary for my mum.

SmallestInTheClass · 23/03/2024 10:31

I'd call out of hours GP or 111. Not drinking and a fever that doesn't come down with Calpol or Nurofen would make me want to get a medical opinion.

Jenny2330 · 23/03/2024 10:31

Aww poor little lad. He does definetly need to be seen, sounds like his body is struggling to self regulate and even with medicine temperature isn't coming down. When my youngest is suffering with fever her breathing rate goes mental. They will probably see him on children's ward based on what you said he's like and run some tests, even if it is viral they can still get some fluids into him which will help with fever, its surprising how much better they can seem.once even just the fever is under control. Good luck and hope he feels better soon

Soubriquet · 23/03/2024 10:33

I would be seeking medical advice with those symptoms. 111 now

benefitstaxcredithelp · 23/03/2024 10:33

A 3 year old not drinking, with v high temp and hallucinations who hasn’t got better for days absolutely needs to be seen. Take him to urgent care or A&E asap please.

@Doveyouknow well, I didn't want to freak out the OP, but my son had all these symptoms when he got leukaemia.

Ffs! Why say that when you know his mother has just had flu and it’s highly likely he’s now caught it.

blankittyblank · 23/03/2024 10:57

@EmilyTjP I was replying to someone who was asking why I said they should insist they take bloods

I'm certain it ISN'T leukaemia by the way, as it's far more likely to be something else. But if she gets bloods taken today then it will mitigate that option. That's all.

Anytime I’ve taken DS to the doctor or hospital they said you’ve done the right thing, even when he turned out to be okay.

toomuchfaff · 23/03/2024 11:02

To reduce his symptoms, bring down his temperature, do this by giving him a tepid bath, not covering him with quilts, instead use a simple sheet, I've done it before with very high temperature where we wet the sheet as well to cool them down.

The high temperature needs to come down, that's causing the shivering, hallucinations, sleepiness etc. Regular calpol and Ibuprofen. Regardless if he is seen or not, get that temperature down. The meds work inside to reduce temperature but you need to help by reducing the external factors
