Would you make this drive, just you and dc

Probably sound ridiculous.
Live abroad and considering driving over the border from one country to another (literally over a bridge)
The journey is around two hours and will be into a city, would you do it with your child if 5 years old for a day out in the Easter holidays? Dh will be at work and I’m really keen to go..just the thought of getting stuck or something going wrong with the car etc

As long as the country isn't dangerous, yes

CinnamonTart · 22/03/2024 20:39

Yes, totally. But you may need written consent from DH to be able to take them out of the country.

Mnk711 · 22/03/2024 20:40

Yes just do it, I've driven my baby and three year old loads on my own on 4h journeys (indeed once one 7h journey) and across borders and it was fine. Just plan the timing carefully to minimise traffic and/or fit in with best time for your child to be in the car (e.g. nap time, early morning etc).

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 22/03/2024 20:40

With proper breakdown cover, yes.

RoberttPostesChild · 22/03/2024 20:44

It sounds totally fine as long as your car is trustworthy and you have access to money if anything went wrong, plus mobile coverage.
I used to drive huge distances across different countries, just DCs and me but wouldn't have been brave enough to do it without all of the above.
Is it THE bridge?

AhNowTed · 22/03/2024 20:45

I've driven to Scotland, Ireland and France from the South East with small children/babies.

2 hours wouldn't cost me a thought.

Geebray · 22/03/2024 20:47

You're going to spend four hours driving for a day out, with a five year old? I wouldn't.

MaryShelley1818 · 22/03/2024 20:49

I'm really surprised people wouldn't do this...it wouldn't even cross my mind as a big deal. I regularly take DS6 and DD3 on long journeys to visit lovely places.
Why would anyone not?

HungryForUdon · 22/03/2024 20:51

I've driven mine all over Europe. No problems.

fedupandstuck · 22/03/2024 20:53

Yes I'd do that drive, as long as I had a plan for where to park in the city. And breakdown cover as a PP has mentioned. I've driven similar distances in the UK for a day out with the kids on my own.

Jk987 · 22/03/2024 20:54

Is the problem the length of the journey or the fact you're crossing a border?

Maybe stay over in a hotel for a night if it's the journey time. Be a nice experience for you both.

parietal · 22/03/2024 20:56

If this is something like Sweden to Copenhagen then yes but I'd take the train.

SpringOfContentment · 22/03/2024 21:11

Bit different, as I couldn't drive, so it was a taxi.
But yes, I've taken the kids over an international border (over a bridge) without DH for a day out (and also DS's Ed Psyc appointment).

Go for it.

KrisAkabusi · 22/03/2024 21:32

Of course I would. It wouldn't occur to me that it's in any way questionable.

DreadPirateRobots · 22/03/2024 21:48

It's only... a couple of hours? Why wouldn't I..?

cherish123 · 22/03/2024 21:52

Of course! Why would you not? Is it because it's a different country? 2 hours is quite short. Is DH not keen?

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 22/03/2024 21:52

A 2hr drive? Why on earth not?

I genuinely can't think of any reason why this wouldn't be okay provided you're fit to drive.

TesticularHeft · 22/03/2024 21:54

Is it wales?

In all seriousness, if I could speak the language of both countries then yes, absolutely.

TesticularHeft · 22/03/2024 21:55

If it's not wales, make sure your car insurance z covers you!

Orangesandsatsumas · 22/03/2024 21:58

Yes, I'm surprised it's even a question!

Telomeres · 22/03/2024 21:59

A two hour drive?! Why wouldn't you?

Chatonette · 22/03/2024 23:46

I have often taken my babies abroad solo—never went with ‘written consent’ or similar from DH (though I have heard from other mums that they encountered issues if they didn’t have the same surname as the DC). We have the same surname and we were okay.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 22/03/2024 23:52

Struggling to compute the question, tbh.

Which countries? If you'd happily drive two hours in country A, then why not country B?

Make sure you have correct insurance/breakdown/permits.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 22/03/2024 23:55

Is your car in bad shape? Why do you think you’ll be stranded by mechanical failure?

MrsO3 · 22/03/2024 23:57

Yes, I’d make the drive
