Fizzy hummus… definite sickness?

chessica · 22/03/2024 12:26

Doesn’t smell or taste bad in the slightest, but noticed when I had already had a mouthful that it was fizzing in my mouth. Maybe had the equivalent of two tablespoons worth before I stopped eating it. Use by is 28/03 so not another week!

Will this probably make me poorly? Heard when it’s fizzy it’s bad.

Yeah it's gone bad.

But just because you eat something bad it won't definitely make you sick. Fingers crossed your stomach does its thing and kills the bacteria before it makes you unwell.

AllThePotatoesAreSinging · 22/03/2024 12:28

I’ve eaten a mouthful of fizzy hummus, nothing bad happened. Don’t worry

benjoin · 22/03/2024 12:28

Yeah I'd take that back for a refund

jengachampion · 22/03/2024 12:29

You'll be fine. I've had many a mouthful of fizzy hummus and nothing's ever happened to me.

MonsteraMama · 22/03/2024 12:29

It's fizzy because it's been fermenting, so yes, not ideal to eat it but probably won't make you sick. Eating bad food isn't a 100% guarantee of sickness, your body is pretty good at dealing with stuff like this. Such a small amount you'll probably be fine!

Cafelattes · 22/03/2024 12:30

I reckon it's probably like drinking a spoonful of milk that's off - really unpleasant but you'd be unlucky to get sick.

IamRoyFuckingKent · 22/03/2024 12:30

You'll be fine, it's only chickpeas, tahini, olive oil and maybe lemon. Most vegetarian things won't make you sick. Don't worry!

LindaPen · 22/03/2024 12:31

I wouldn't eat any more, but I don't think one mouthful will make you sick

Droolylabradors · 22/03/2024 12:32

Oh I really like it when my houmous goes fizzy!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 22/03/2024 12:32

I've often eaten it slightly fizzy - it has never done me any harm whatsoever.

Me too tbh

Why?

Droolylabradors · 22/03/2024 12:36

I don't know, I just do! I also like non fizzy houmous too!!

I leave my houmous in the fridge for weeks whether home made or shop bought. It's fine. Like PP said, it's just olive oil and lemon and tahini and chickpeas.

chessica · 22/03/2024 12:40

Ugh, I really hope I don’t get sick. I’m also in the first trimester so it would be a real worry if I ended up with food poisoning. I’m surprised it would be going off already given the date isn’t until next week.

chessica · 22/03/2024 12:34

Why?

Gives it an interesting extra tang!

Anyotherdude · 22/03/2024 12:42

I made some hummus from scratch for a party, and noticed (too late) that someone was eating it the next day, when it hadn’t been put in the fridge overnight (and the temperature was in the high 20 degrees C.
When I advised caution for this reason, my guest, who comes from the ME, told me that as I’d made it, it would be ok as it’s a Levant recipe (very warm climate) and she had also noticed that only the shop-bought hummus ever goes off before it’s eaten within a day or so.
So - I’m now suspicious of ready-made hummus!

Droolylabradors · 22/03/2024 12:44

Yes I like it when it's been left out too. So that's probably the fizz thing.

OP you'll be fine. I served my teen lamb stew made with ever so slightly gone off meat the other week by accident (thought I'd picked out the bits that looked tainted). I spat mine out, she said that all meat tastes the same and hadn't noticed.

Neither of us was sick.

Mama2many73 · 22/03/2024 12:46

Have you just opened it today?
Once open, shops say to eat in 2 or 3 days, so if opened earlier, even if in date, it could have started to ferment.

Yes bought and opened today, it was sealed

KreedKafer · 22/03/2024 13:01

You are very, very unlikely to be ill from eating slightly fermented hummus.

Even foods that have quite a high risk for food poisoning if they're bad aren't guaranteed to make you ill.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 22/03/2024 13:12

benjoin · 22/03/2024 12:28

Yeah I'd take that back for a refund

Depends how long it's been open really, aren't you supposed to eat it within a couple of days of opening? But if you've just opened it then yeah, I'd be annoyed but not sure you'd get a refund

Idontjetwashthefucker · 22/03/2024 13:13

Cross posted. Bin it

Going to. Just worried especially for the baby

I don't want to worry you unnecessarily OP but I've had food poisoning twice from bad hummus. It was fizzy but more noticeably it was tangy- i thought they'd just gone a bit heavy on the lemon juice. I still can't tolerate chickpeas <sob>

MelonSmoothie · 22/03/2024 13:25

I've stopped buying Tesco hummus now as it always goes fizzy really early. I've never got sick from it though!
