I can’t believe how expensive food is now especially in the likes of Sainsbury’s for the same product. Total P-take, e.g. Organic Milk Sainsbury’s £2 Aldi £1.79.

Why give us ‘nectar’ prices when they are inflated prices in the first place? £5.50 for a Pizza Express Margherita and £2.75 on Nectar. I think actually it’s the fakery with making us think we are getting a good deal that’s pissing me off.

I went to Aldi today (we don’t have one near us) as I was doing a drop off nearby and the price difference is huge!!

Aldi and Lidl are great when they have their special promotions on like Greek or Polish week. I would highly recommend the Polish mayonnaise, it knocks Hellman's out of the park. Morrisons also sell it in the World Foods section. When they had a French week I bought some glorious French lavender honey. They are also good for speciality cheeses and cured meat

Isn't all milk "organic" ?

Eh no.

TwistedSisters · 22/03/2024 14:52

SloaneStreetVandal · 22/03/2024 14:30

I think you're somewhat correct, in all the years I've shopped at Tesco I've never bought own brand. Cheese, milk, meat, fruit, fresh veg is all cheaper in Aldi though.

Tesco milk 4 pints £1.45
Creamfields mild cheddar cheese 400g £2.49
Bananas 6pk 75p
Apples 6pk £1.39

All above are Aldi price match at Tesco.

I'm not advertising for Tesco BTW 😄 just I think it's a really common misconception that Aldi is 'loads' cheaper, other supermarkets do a lot of Aldi price match stuff too.

BlueBadgeHolder · 22/03/2024 14:53

Supermarkets have to do ALDI price match on basics because they were more expensive. It is a marketing ploy.

TrustPenguins · 22/03/2024 15:04

The price match stuff makes me laugh. Somewhere like Sainsburys will say they price match Aldi on hundreds of products. What about the rest? Aldi price match Aldi on ALL their products!
I believe it's definitely true that you can save at least a third on your food bill by shopping at Aldi.

@MerryChristmasToYou

i wouldn’t give a shit tbh 🤷‍♀️

Me neither.

If anyone is looking at exciting dirt to dig they won’t find it in my trolley. They might spot a bottle of wine about three times a year if that does it for them.

The club card thing is a non issue for me. I can’t imagine why anyone would get stressed out about big brother knowing what they put in their shopping trolley.

I must be missing something but having shopped in Tesco/Sainsbury since they opened, without repercussion, I’m not going to start worrying about it now 🤷‍♀️

Are you confusing organic and free range?

Pinscher · 22/03/2024 15:11

The new pricing system is BS, it's put me off shopping there. They've obviously.done it as they think it'll increase loyalty to their stores. A stupid idea as most people who shop in a certain store do it out of convenience or because of what the shop offers, not because they think they're getting a bargain when in fact they're exchanging their personal data for the normal price and escaping the hyperinflation price.

MargeretIntheWood · 22/03/2024 15:12

SpringOfContentment · 22/03/2024 10:26

My issue with Aldi and lidl is the quality. Stuff goes off really quickly, and the fruit and veg is really variable in quality. After binning a whole bag if potatoes as every single gle one eas black throughout, we stopped going to either store (but we don't use sainsburys except for emergencies)

Damn, I was just about to start a new habit of making a weekly trek to Lidl with my shopping trolley, to save money. I normally shop at Sainsbury's.
Is the fresh meat and fish at Lidl generally okay?

HauntedBungalow · 22/03/2024 15:18

LuckySantangelo35 · 22/03/2024 14:09

Scan and shop that you do yourself is a game changer !

no more assistants licking their fingers to open bags or coughing or blowing their nose before handling your stuff

hurrah

What bags? There are no bloody bags.

CheckeredAliceBand · 22/03/2024 15:21

@MargeretIntheWood it really does depend on the store you go to. I've shopped at my local Aldi for years and the fruit and veg is fine and lasts fine. But I've been to others ones where it's not good. You have to try your local one and see.

Milk isn't free range.

The whole point of the loyalty prices is for precisely that, loyalty. The supermarkets are duking it out for customers so they have to give incentive. I quite like it, I get reduced prices and build up points I can use as vouchers etc. don't get why people get all worked up about it

Same. I currently have £61 worth of Clubcard vouchers, including a £30 voucher I got for taking out a Tesco Mobile sim only contract. I save these up and use them for things like alcohol and snack foods at Christmas, so it saves me a good bit.

Two weeks ago, Tesco sent me full-sized samples of dishwasher tablets, Pears hand soap and a mint Galaxy bar. Plus I get regular double points vouchers and extra points on certain items I buy regularly.

What I don’t understand about those who get all bent out of shape about Tesco using their data, is that they’re using smartphones, laptops and social media, so their data is out there.

It’s pretty impossible to exist today without trading your data, so if Tesco want to use mine to give me 50 extra Clubcard points for buying olives, I’m happy with that 😂🤷🏻‍♀️.

The government probably know more about me than I know about myself.

tiredandabitfat · 22/03/2024 10:09

Becuase sainsburys is a nicer shopping experience, for those who wish to pay it.

Aldi have less staff, less choice, no help packing your bags etc.

Some people prefer to pay the extra 21p for milk and have a more pleasant shopping experience.

Well, the experience in my local Aldi is much better than my local Sainsbury's!

In fact, I think the Aldi has more staff! It certainly has more manned check-outs open.

It even has products on the shelves instead of big gaps, like Sainsbury's.

moreoutsidespace · 22/03/2024 15:50

I can’t feed my family from Aldi or Lidl as I don’t like the quality of quite a bit of their fresh food/fruit etc. I do buy some things from there though. Sainsbury’s is nearest us but I opt for a Tesco home delivery to save driving to the supermarket and back. The delivery saver works well for us.

TwirlyWhirlie · 22/03/2024 15:56

I don’t find that Aldi is that much cheaper tbh. They’re all taking the mick and profiteering.

Midnightrunners · 22/03/2024 15:58

Nearest Lidl to me is a chaotic mess. Never anywhere to park, stuff piled up everywhere, never the same stuff there the following week and the days of queuing-up are long gone so I'm happy to pay the slight difference and get what I want and then slump down in Starbucks - which is in the same building so I don't have to move my car, which I can park anywhere.

Oh, and I get my milk delivered, by a man at silly o'clock in an electric van.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 22/03/2024 15:58

I’ve two sainsburys and two ALDIs locally.

new sainsburys is horrid compared to the older one. Stock is poor quality, staff leave you for ages if you need help.
the old one is lovely, staff are happy to help and go out of their way for you.

old aldi is manic and an endurance. New aldi is lovely, helpful staff, great quality fruit and veg.

these are all within miles of each other

Mrsttcno1 · 22/03/2024 16:01

Totally agree it’s all a bit of a joke. We have always done our weekly shop at Aldi or Asda but a couple of months ago when we were staying in a cottage elsewhere the only option was m&s so we did our shop there and were shocked at how actually similar the prices were. We did a full weekly food shop at m&s after that trip and it’s genuinely the same price as our Aldi/Asda shops used to be and much better quality (especially for fresh fruit and meat). We do our weekly shop there every week now after spending so long thinking m&s was a fortune!

CheckeredAliceBand · 22/03/2024 16:02

@MerryChristmasToYou in this country - of course it is! We don't keep cows in factory farming facilities here so it's all free range.

Midnightrunners · 22/03/2024 16:03

Mrsttcno1, interesting, I'll try that myself and they have a cafeteria too.

VegetablesFightingToReclaimTheAubergieneEmoji · 22/03/2024 16:03

I think whilst everyone else has been increasing their prices m and s havent, so all of a sudden they look like value. Especially when their quality is generally better

Wexone · 22/03/2024 16:04

ButterflyTable · 22/03/2024 11:15

Aldi M&S and Sainsbury’s have the same meat supplier.

they may have the same meat supplier, but their quality standards etc are different so therefore each process is done differently depending on the customer (Supermarket requirements) so therefore factories charge different and this is passed onto the customer

Not all cows are free ranged. Some are indoors

CheckeredAliceBand · 22/03/2024 16:07

In the UK? I know they are kept in for winter often - for their own welfare, but I'm not aware that we have any farms where cows are inside year round?
