I can’t believe how expensive food is now especially in the likes of Sainsbury’s for the same product. Total P-take, e.g. Organic Milk Sainsbury’s £2 Aldi £1.79.

Why give us ‘nectar’ prices when they are inflated prices in the first place? £5.50 for a Pizza Express Margherita and £2.75 on Nectar. I think actually it’s the fakery with making us think we are getting a good deal that’s pissing me off.

I went to Aldi today (we don’t have one near us) as I was doing a drop off nearby and the price difference is huge!!

I really dislike the loyalty card prices, its not just sainsbury, its tesco and the coop too.
I refused to buy coffee in coop the other day as I didn't have the loyalty card - they were charging customers without loyalty card double the price.
But I do prefer smaller supermarkets and a more pleasant environment when I shop.

David from Titford Lane in Prickleton on Sea is refusing to have a club card. His shopping data is more valuable than 30% off all yoghurts and 2 for 1 on tinned soup.
He'll buy one soup and a full price yoghurt to make a stand against large cooperations. Respect where respect is due.

*He caved at 40% off all fish fingers weekend.

Fortunately, not everyone’s silly enough to believe the false economy of cut-price yoghurt and fish fingers - which are always offset by price hikes on other products anyway - justifies being targeted by systematic personal data-mining.

Isn't all milk "organic" ?

Of course not. All sorts of pesticides are put on the land that most cattle graze on. Far too many cattle never see grass. They spend their entire lives packed into barns eating grain than also contains pesticides. It’s been clearly proven that the residue of pesticides and any other pollutants in the cattle’s food is found in cows milk. We were advised to avoid milk from cows grazing in Scotland for at least 18-months/2 years after the Chernobyl nuclear leak. Organic milk comes from cows grazed on land that has had no pesticides on it for, I think it’s 3 years. As an aside, that grass contains clover which is good for the health of the cow and enhances the taste of the milk. Experts in the field (no pun intended 🤷‍♀️) say that if only one food you consume is organic, it should be milk.

I've just come back from Aldi and it's definitely cheaper than Sainsbury's and Tesco.

So much ageism! 'Poor dears' - what a sneery remark.
Personally, I find the problems with the self-service tills are those people who scan their items, place said items on the packing shelf, pay, and only then do they think about packing items in bags, thus creating an extra step. No to mention those paying with their phones and spend the next 5 minutes waving the phone around, trying to get the codes to work!

I am both “an old dear” (FFS 🤬) and one of those who pay with their phone. I do not spend 5 minutes waving it around. I point it toward the machine, it pings and I leave with my already packed bags!

Also does anyone else have the problem that Aldi milk bottles seem to leak every single time, I’ve given up buying it. In fact I only shop in Aldi for a few very specific things that we like now , their extremely nutty muesli is delicious and packed full of nuts and fruit. Otherwise I’ve given up, it’s a horrible shop, the fruit and veg doesn’t last, and it’s not necessarily cheaper. I’d rather shop in Sainsbury’s although I do agree that the nectar card thing isn’t right. Just offer fair prices for everyone please.

They are recycled, hence the bad quality.

How weird every bottle of milk you buy at Aldi leaks. I buy 4 bottles every week and have never even had one that leaked.

Terrribletwos · 23/03/2024 19:15

Same in Tesco, recycled bottles.

@potato57 thank you so much for sharing the websites/companies. Will check them out! ❤️

I’ve tried HelloFresh several times but royally disappointed many times with the freshness of their veggies. There was always something going bad on delivery and many times I’d receive the delivery on Thursday afternoon and be ready to meal prep on Saturday morning and half the produce was rotten! 🤬
so no thank you!

Sw33tR3d · 23/03/2024 17:46

If you don’t sign up for them you get charged more on many items on the 2 tier pricing system. . You also don’t get the points that bring the over inflated prices down slightly.

Precisely. It’s still a choice.

I’ve seen a picture of you @AnnieSnap and you’re most definitely not an old dear!

notjaneausten · 23/03/2024 19:44

We have a new Aldi, very attractive store, but it’s out of town. The Sainsbury’s here, out of town, but the other side, is grubby and neglected looking. One slow checkout, the rest is self serve. Lots of staff hanging about doing very little. I think Nectar is a total con. I do sometimes like the clothing on the rare occasions I go there.
Aldi is brilliant, I do check the veg, but as it all comes from the same place with different packing, it’s up to the customer. The staff work hard, and are always pleasant and helpful. Never long queues, fast service, it’s Aldi every time!

Right so in a col crisis customers have to sign away data privacy to get cheaper prices others have ie you have to buy your privacy.

Nice

I already pointed out that you can put any name you like on a loyalty card - be Ms M Mouse if you like. Equally they’re getting your data any time you go through the checkout, why do you think your receipt’s itemised?

I don’t want supermarkets watching my shopping habits and churning out offers I need to be look out for to get a fair price, a different name doesn’t stop that.

Most shoppers just want the same cheaper prices for all an and that isn’t Sainsbury or Tesco.

myfaceismyown · 23/03/2024 20:04

I like a Lidl or a Co-op for the size. Enough variety to get what you need. However, Co-op also has this irritating cheaper prices utter nonsense business. i cannot shop in tesco as it is ENORMOUS. I can't find what I want. End up with half the list missing. I used to like Sainsbury's but now it is full of Argos and homewares and utter nonsense. We do not have Waitrose. Our Aldi is awful. Asda is marginally better.
I do not want to be rewarded for loyalty. I want to pick up my produce when it is convenient to me and expect it to be edible and last 3 days. I do not expect more. I do not expect to pay extra for this privilege! I do not want rewards. I want food to eat when I need it. Stop these stupid marketing mind games and just sell decent produce!!!
Rant over.

Becuase sainsburys is a nicer shopping experience, for those who wish to pay it.

Aldi have less staff, less choice, no help packing your bags etc.

Some people prefer to pay the extra 21p for milk and have a more pleasant shopping experience.

In a hurry, and right on top of Waitrose, I just grabbed whole milk for DGS. It was a few pence more. What a difference - like old fashioned milk with a cream on the top! Well worth the extra. And, as you say, a better experience.

Our local ALDI is so unreliable with milk too, running out of skimmed and whole on a regular basis. And their lactose free is awful! Often nobody on the tills at all, and offers don't work on the self checkouts.

Pipsquiggle · 23/03/2024 20:33

Missingpop · 23/03/2024 18:03

It’s getting fucking ridiculous I truly hate shopping; but it’s worse now cause the fuckers are robbing us blind; a jar of jam £1.50!! My dogs food has almost trebled in price it’s crippling i don’t mind because their my babies but I can see why people are struggling it’s getting worse by the day

@Missingpop

You are angry at the wrong businesses. You need to be pissed off at the following before having a pop at grocers:
Brexit
Brexit with no customs union
Energy providers
Mortgage companies
Landlords
Brexit with no freedom of movement
Liz Truss
Multinational suppliers
Suppliers who exploit circumstances eg. Michelle Mone

Grocers work on tiny margins.

hotmailgmailoutlook · 23/03/2024 20:37

Yes Aldi is cheaper but the experience in Sainsbury is different, We have recently switched to Sainsburys from aldi. It feels spacious to walk in the aisles and there is always help available.

Mt61 · 23/03/2024 20:41

SuePotato · 22/03/2024 10:23

I actually much prefer the ‘experience’ at Aldi compared to Sainsburys

The staff in my local Sainsbury’s are beyond incompetent, unhelpful, rude and so slow!
There aren’t enough staff to begin with, they only have one till open most of the time (despite how long the que is) and then they want you to do the self checkout, which is fine, but it’s cramped space wise, no member of staff supervising 90% of the time and now they’ve introduced this stupid system where you have to scan your receipt to leave.

Normally it would be fine, but our Sainsbury’s clientele seem to be mainly elderly and they struggle with operating the self scanner, and then they get stuck behind the barrier because they can’t scan their receipt. So it all backs up with no member of staff in sight to help the situation; and if there is one they’re usually very snappy at the poor old dears (sighing, huffing, rolling there eyes, moving at a snails pace and seemingly enjoying keeping customers waiting for no apparent reason)

Much prefer Aldi, helpful staff and much more relaxed experience!

I agree, our Sainsbury’s is the same only one check out, tried the the self scanner, only to find if you have a large shop it doesn’t fit on that tiny ledge! If you pack before hand the machine goes into melt down 😩

Wooloohooloo · 23/03/2024 20:47

I shop at Sainsbury's because it's close to home and I like the self scanning thing where you can scan & pack as you shop

MerryChristmasToYou · 23/03/2024 20:48

Yes Aldi is cheaper but the experience in Sainsbury is different
Huge Sainsbury's. Had to walk to the far end to get one item (which was more expensive than other supermarkets including Waitrose).
Small Aldi. Compact.

Sainsbury's - one manned till only, self-service.
Aldi - two manned tills.

The staff at the Aldi are friendly and helpful. Sainsbury's not so friendly.

I think it depends on the branch.

Pipsquiggle · 23/03/2024 20:48

The main reasons that Aldi and Lidl are cheaper than the rest of the other grocers are due to the following:
Smaller supermarkets
Less staff
Significantly less range
Relatively fewer chillers and therefore less waste
No services like dotcom, click and collect, no Uber / deliveroo

Wooloohooloo · 23/03/2024 20:48

I also get all my petrol from Sainsbury's so my points build up. I like the range & it's close to home.

Mt61 · 23/03/2024 20:49

PoppingTomorrow · 22/03/2024 10:11

You're surprised a budget supermarket charges less for the same product?

Home Bargains & B & M used to be cheap but their prices have gone up massively. Use to fill my trolley but not anymore, just end up going to the regular supermarket now
