I can’t believe how expensive food is now especially in the likes of Sainsbury’s for the same product. Total P-take, e.g. Organic Milk Sainsbury’s £2 Aldi £1.79.

Why give us ‘nectar’ prices when they are inflated prices in the first place? £5.50 for a Pizza Express Margherita and £2.75 on Nectar. I think actually it’s the fakery with making us think we are getting a good deal that’s pissing me off.

I went to Aldi today (we don’t have one near us) as I was doing a drop off nearby and the price difference is huge!!

Isn't all milk "organic" ?

ButterflyTable · 22/03/2024 10:07

Is it? I thought only organic milk was organic?!

I dislike the "Nectar" prices thing. It's just a way of forcing us to be tracked by their IT systems. If they can sell something for £2.75 then do that rather than charge us double for the privilege of not taking part in their data collection.

Becuase sainsburys is a nicer shopping experience, for those who wish to pay it.

Aldi have less staff, less choice, no help packing your bags etc.

Some people prefer to pay the extra 21p for milk and have a more pleasant shopping experience.

I agree. Don't like loyalty programmes in supermarkets.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 22/03/2024 10:10

I think Sainsbury's is more expensive than m&S I don't shop there even though we have one locally

PoppingTomorrow · 22/03/2024 10:11

You're surprised a budget supermarket charges less for the same product?

pinkyredrose · 22/03/2024 10:12

YANBU. BTW you can say 'piss'.

BodenCardiganNot · 22/03/2024 10:12

This.

Bjorkdidit · 22/03/2024 10:12

Eh? There's been those sorts of differences between Sainsbury's and Aldi for decades.

Aldi work on ruthless efficiency, simple ranges, more basic stores, fewer 'extras' like in store cafes, loyalty schemes etc, so offer cheaper prices.

Sainsburys are more about 'experience', choice and a nicer environment. That costs more, so do their products.

ButterflyTable · 22/03/2024 10:13

I don’t find Sainsbury’s any different an experience to Aldi tbh. The tills are never open at Sainsbury’s, here at Aldi they had self service and opened tills if the queues got long.

i spend a lot of money in Sainsbury’s. I don’t understand why they charge so much more.

I’ve always bought Organic milk and thought other milk was not organic.

I like the variety in Sainsbury’s eg I can buy Asian produce there and not in Aldi, but for things like Organic milk that probably all comes from Muller or their chicken that comes from the same place why charge more?

Also does anyone else have the problem that Aldi milk bottles seem to leak every single time, I’ve given up buying it. In fact I only shop in Aldi for a few very specific things that we like now , their extremely nutty muesli is delicious and packed full of nuts and fruit. Otherwise I’ve given up, it’s a horrible shop, the fruit and veg doesn’t last, and it’s not necessarily cheaper. I’d rather shop in Sainsbury’s although I do agree that the nectar card thing isn’t right. Just offer fair prices for everyone please.

PrimalOwl10 · 22/03/2024 10:15

Sainsburys has always been a more expensive store, their quality of food is higher than aldi. I rather pay more for better quality.

colourfulcrochet · 22/03/2024 10:15

Sainsbury is a nicer shopping experience? Not in my area.

OhItsOnlyCynthia · 22/03/2024 10:17

You've answered your own question. They charge more because people will pay it.

No issues with milk or fruit and veg and I shop there every week
I think stores are really variable. My friend said she hates Morrisons which I was confused about until I went to her local store and she came to mine - absolutely worlds apart
Hers is cramped, messy and feels like nothing in it whereas mine had a refurb a few years ago and is huge and really well stocked

The Aldi I use is a couple of years old. I just googled it and someone has reviewed it as "chaos, grumpy staff, always cold"

Yeah it gets busy, so I shop at the quiet times. Staff are busy but lovely. Not fussed if it's cold!

So buy the bulk of your shopping on Lidl or Aldi then have a list of things you need to get elsewhere.

I bulk buy in the international supermarket in my nearest city - 1kg jars of crushed ginger or garlic, 750ml bottles of dark and light soy sauce, sesame oil, Udon and soba noodles, sticky rice in 10kg bags etc. I can get pak choi in Lidl, as well as tofu and so on.

I also buy all my spices from the local weigh and pay type shop - take jars in and refill for 1/4 the price of preweighed.

We cook a LOT of Asian and Indian food in our house.

Gcsunnyside23 · 22/03/2024 10:20

The whole point of the loyalty prices is for precisely that, loyalty. The supermarkets are duking it out for customers so they have to give incentive. I quite like it, I get reduced prices and build up points I can use as vouchers etc. don't get why people get all worked up about it

Because people will pay it and they are a business not a charity.

SuePotato · 22/03/2024 10:23

I actually much prefer the ‘experience’ at Aldi compared to Sainsburys

The staff in my local Sainsbury’s are beyond incompetent, unhelpful, rude and so slow!
There aren’t enough staff to begin with, they only have one till open most of the time (despite how long the que is) and then they want you to do the self checkout, which is fine, but it’s cramped space wise, no member of staff supervising 90% of the time and now they’ve introduced this stupid system where you have to scan your receipt to leave.

Normally it would be fine, but our Sainsbury’s clientele seem to be mainly elderly and they struggle with operating the self scanner, and then they get stuck behind the barrier because they can’t scan their receipt. So it all backs up with no member of staff in sight to help the situation; and if there is one they’re usually very snappy at the poor old dears (sighing, huffing, rolling there eyes, moving at a snails pace and seemingly enjoying keeping customers waiting for no apparent reason)

Much prefer Aldi, helpful staff and much more relaxed experience!

SpringOfContentment · 22/03/2024 10:26

My issue with Aldi and lidl is the quality. Stuff goes off really quickly, and the fruit and veg is really variable in quality. After binning a whole bag if potatoes as every single gle one eas black throughout, we stopped going to either store (but we don't use sainsburys except for emergencies)
