If I’m at the bottom end of a band 4 nhs, I think that’s about £14.50 an hour?
So after tax would that be less than £100 a day?
It costs me a lot to get to and from work- let’s say £17- in total for return journey.
i buy a nice lunch and coffees ( I can’t help it ) so let’s say that all adds up to £16 max ish per day.
So am I effectively only earning £60 ish a day?
Sorry if it’s a silly question but just checking I’m roughly correct.
Just weighing up things at the moment.
I’m not asking how to save money on this- just want to check my rough maths especially the bit at the top ie after tax per day?
Thank you 🙏

How many hours a week do you work?

Springsummersun · 21/03/2024 21:36

I work 24 hours per week- thanks

Your pay slip will tell you your net pay, ie after tax and NI. Divide that by the number of days to get the daily rate. Your phone will have a calculator on it. If not, try

You can't afford a fancy lunch every day on twenty-odd hours a week.

Springsummersun · 21/03/2024 21:37

All weekdays so no overtime - just to add - thanks

Surely you can look at your payslip?

Springsummersun · 21/03/2024 21:40

Thanks- I’ll need to check the computer for my payslip. Just wondering if I’m in very roughly the right amount.

£16 a day on coffee and lunch???? You can't afford that.

Or just check what appears in your bank each month and divide that by the number of days you work in a month

SpringSprungALeak · 21/03/2024 21:43

What you earn, is what you earn, you don't earn what you've got left after spending it!

thats a ridiculous amount of money to spend on lunch earning so little.

Waffleson · 21/03/2024 21:45

You haven't said his many hours your work per day, but if it's 7, you would only be making £101 before tax. Once you've paid tax, NI and pensions it will be quite a bit less. How long is your shift?

Springsummersun · 21/03/2024 21:46

Springsprung- I know, it’s just the way I’ve phrased it

If you worked 37.5 hours a week at the bottom of band 4 you'd be earning £25,146 a year.

25146/37.5 *24 = £16,093.44 annual salary

With a pension contribution of 6.5%, your take home pay is about £1216 a month.

You don't say how many days a week you work over, but assuming 5 days, you spend over a quarter of your income on lunch every month, and over a quarter on travelling into work.

MolkosTeenageAngst · 21/03/2024 21:53

A nice lunch and coffee are a luxury considering you could bring your own from home at a fraction of the cost. I don’t think you can treat yourself at work and then factor the cost of the treat into expenses like you can travel to make out to yourself you earn less. I understand taking the cost of essential travel into your wage when working out how much you earn as you usually can’t avoid travel costs but you could easily avoid spending £75+ a week on nice lunches and coffee if you want more money left each week.

Ourshoddyhouse · 21/03/2024 21:54

Say you're on £25146 pro rata, you divide this by 52 for the weekly salary
Then divide this by 37.5 for the hourly rate
Times that by 7 (or 12 depending on your shift length) this gives you your daily pay - before tax & contributions

MisfitMusic · 21/03/2024 22:01

Lunch and coffee £16 per day!! That is ridiculous on this pay unless you are working because you want to and don't need the money, use the salary calculator that has been posted as this will show take home pay if you don't have a payslip.

Springsummersun · 21/03/2024 22:04

Planbea- thank you! That actually makes it really clear.
The £16 is me adding up lunch and coffees or what I buy if I quickly stop at a shop etc so will def be £16 max- know that’s a lot though.
Re the travel- thanks for working this out as that has hit home that I should prob be looking at a job with less travel !

FOJN · 21/03/2024 22:06

You've not provided enough information.

We know you are bottom of band 4 and you work 24 hours a week

Do you receive HCAS (inner or outer)? There is quite a substantial difference in the hourly rate of pay. £12.86p/h without HCAS Vs £15.49 with inner HCAS.

How long are your shifts/how many days do you work?

Do you contribute to the NHS pension scheme?

I am not at the moment, but I have been earning over £100k and I wouldn't spend £16 on lunch and coffee in one day, or anything close!

And your logic that you should deduct this from your earnings to come up with what you earn in a day is bizarre.

Misthios · 21/03/2024 22:48

i buy a nice lunch and coffees ( I can’t help it )

Yes you can. This sort of attitude really grinds my gears - what am I like? I just can't walk past a coffee shop without getting a latte!! And the sandwiches from the canteen are just totes amazeballs (tinkly laugh).

You can "help it". Just stop pissing £16 a day away on lunch and coffee and then you'll have less to moan about, won't you?

Springsummersun · 21/03/2024 23:21

Er… I wasn’t moaning- I asked a maths question!
