Timeline of dh and his illness....

19/2 - felt dreadful, went to bed and pretty much didn't get up until 23/2
25/2 - I rang 111, call came v late at night to go to Urgent Care
26/2 - went to Urgent Care, sent to ambulatory department in bigger hospital.
Had blood tests, CRP 209, WBC count high but don't know what. Given 5 days of Amoxiclav and sent on way, told to come back on 28/2. CRP 163, discharged.
4/3 - emergency GP appointment as felt dreadful still - sent to a different hospital a&e, told he was a very ill man.
After bloods, x-ray and heart scan, kept in.
4 lots of antibiotics daily, 2 IV and 2 oral.
12/3 - discharged with 5 days of antibiotics.
20/3 - back to a&e as he could feel the infection consuming him again. Sent home with his 7th variant of antibiotic.
He doesn't feel this one is hitting the infection.

AIBU to ask, where on earth do we go from here?

Have checked sepsis symptoms?

Have checked sepsis symptoms?

As I understand it, a CRP of over 200 is classed as sepsis 🤷🏻‍♀️

Having had septic shock, I think mine was lower than this! Fast heart rate is what the blurb says.
How's his blood pressure? Is he weeing!
Google the symptoms and if they are ticking off then ask is it sepsis and if not, why not?

KreedKafer · 21/03/2024 18:40

What has he actually been diagnosed with? Chest infection, kidney infection, sepsis from an injury or what? What are his symptoms? And what do you mean by 'he can feel the infection consuming him'?

angelopal · 21/03/2024 19:04

They should have been trying to locate the source of infection to determine the correct antibiotics. What tests have they done?

Was recently admitted with crp of 314. Was given general antibiotics but still had a fever so needed further investigation. After some scans they identified the issue and got the code antibiotics.

cryinglaughing · 21/03/2024 20:30

They said he had pneumonia but that wasn't the source of the infection.
He was diagnosed with a major infection of unknown origin.
The only tests, apart from blood, was they drew some fluid off his lungs - not infected.

They have just thrown a cocktail of antibiotics at him, none of which have squashed it.

When he said he felt it consuming him, he says he feels like he is dying. He is the most laid back, least dramatic person you could meet.
I seriously thought he was dying at one point, between going to the first and second hospital.
He is drinking and peeing okay, his appetite isn't good. He has lost 1st from a not large frame.

You must be so worried. I'd head back to A and E, why on earth are they discharging him when the infection isn't under control?

Sorry to be a broken record! My sepsis came from a sore throat (virus!), they never found any infection!
Feeling like you are going to die, like you're never felt before is a sign, or he could just have really bad flu symptoms.

cryinglaughing · 21/03/2024 20:42

@chickenpieandchips that has just reminded me, he was tested for flu and Covid at the first hospital, both negative.

I am worried because I just don't know why they aren't taking it seriously or how to make them take.it seriously.

Have they done his blood cultures or full bloid count? Fbc will show signs of infection through raised CRP but further lab work (cultures)would enable medics to know more and tailor the meds accordingly. Really hope they get to the bottom of it soon

When my DH thought I had sepsis it was the middle of the night. He spent all night reading NICE guidelines. We went to a private doctors in the morning as I told him he was being dramatic but at the same time I couldn't face an and e. They sent me to A and e with a potential sepsis diagnosis. He went into full flow mode. They didn't stress too much at first but by the end of day they were worried. I went to a ward and by the next morning I was in ICU and told I was the sickest person in the hospital.
I think you just have to be persistent. Ask questions, ask why are they are sending him home if they don't know what is wrong?
It might not be sepsis but it doesn't sound good either.
