To think this charity shop was ridiculous?

Have a fridge, freezer and new double mattress to donate to charity. The mattress is genuinely brand new and has never been slept on because I bought it and then was given a new orthopedic one which was more suitable for my poor bad back! I think I laid on it for less than an hour total.

They've just been and I've never had such an awful experience - they refused the fridge and freezer because "the door seals have gone" (they haven't - I've been using both up until last weekend and never had an issue. The freezer is also missing a couple of drawers (movers dropped and broke them but it's never been an issue)

He then called me a liar over saying the mattress is brand new - because unfortunately I snagged it on the door strip getting it out of the bedroom and it has a few small clicks on the cover.

It has really put me off ever trying to donate anything ever again. I don't have much money and could have sold them in Facebook. The fridge and freezer are a few years old so don't look brand new but do work perfectly well. The way he spoke to me made me feel really small and stupid and I hate being called a liar (I'm ND and not being believed is a massive thing for me.)

If anyone wants to know the charity name I'll share it via PM but it is a big name in the town where I live.

I wouldn't want a freezer with two drawers missing, and you admit the mattress doesn't look perfect.
The charity shop will know what it can and can't sell.

ladyofshertonabbas · 21/03/2024 16:38

Tbh I wouldn’t judge the charity on the interpersonal skills of the people collecting the goods for said charity. Some of them are on day release or parole, not a finishing school.

it was a horrible experience, but it’s just one person.

Tbh when I was on the bones of my arse I'd have been grateful for a.new clean mattress, even if it did have a few clicks! He also didn't have to call the op a liar.

Himawarigirl · 21/03/2024 16:44

Charity shops have to be really careful what they sell, especially mattresses and soft furnishings, due to liability from fires. It's kind of you to wish to donate but, as you say, you probably can sell the items, whilst pointing out the issues involved. The charity will find it a large use of time coming out to collect things which, upon seeing, they know they can't sell on. And taking and warehousing things they can't easily pass on is not possible either.

EmptyTheFrickingBins · 21/03/2024 16:46

The tag is there and there's not a thing wrong with it apart from a few clicks where I caught it.

My husband tried to donate a few items from his late mother's flat , the 2 men from the charity who turned up were lucky they weren't thrown out the door ! They left with nothing were incredibly rude ! Perfectly good wardrobes and beds ended up in the dump.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 21/03/2024 16:47

None of the charity shops in our area will take any form of bedding. I'm amazed they came and looked at it in the first place.

I actually don't agree - they're paid by the charity and are representing them so should at least be civil and not call people liars!

Put it on Facebook for a low amount (not free as that attracts time wasters) - it'll be gone within a day

PuttingDownRoots · 21/03/2024 16:49

Either sell or offer for free on Facebook, freecycle, olio etc.

Meganmeccano · 21/03/2024 16:49

He was unreasonable to speak to you rudely but not unreasonable to refuse the items; they take up a lot of space and might be difficult to sell in that condition.

Sell them on Facebook etc. and give the money to charity if you want or put them on Freecycle.

Ladyofthelake53 · 21/03/2024 16:50

Put them on FB marketplace and get some for them, ungrateful fuckers

It's so incredibly wasteful. 🙁

They're still usable items and the idea of them going to landfill makes me feel a bit ill.

Done, and I've sold all three, just waiting for pick ups! 😁

Not the point of the thread, but what do you mean by clicks on the mattress?

Lovingitallnow · 21/03/2024 16:53

Just sell them yourself then? In fairness to the charity shop they're only going to take things they know they can sell- especially things that take up a lot of space and will need delivery/collection arranged. If you don't want them to go to landfill put them for sale online.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 21/03/2024 16:53

Charity shops SELL items to make money i.e. to make a profit.

They are not there to take away your broken items.
They do not know you only slept on the mattress for one hour, or one day or one week or one year.

If you want to give these items away then do so, stating correctly the condition they are in, and the persons wanting them collects them

Otherwise you may find your local Council will collect the items, prob for a charge.

citrinetrilogy · 21/03/2024 16:54

Charity shops don't send volunteers or dedicated fundraisers to collect stuff, they send 'man & van' people, who are just being paid for doing a job. They can consequently be far more brusque than you would expect from an official from the charity itself.

We had a similar experience when clearing out a property last year and the van driver was not particularly nice. We contacted the charity and they apologised.

iwafs · 21/03/2024 16:55

People can be so rude or on the take. I don't bother donating stuff for this reason now. I tried to put an ikea toddler bed in the "too good to tip" section at the tip. It was unmarked (dd had mostly slept in my bed) and a tip guy shouted aggressively at me (from some distance away, he couldn't see the condition of the bed, which was excelllent) that "DON'T WANT THAT". I don't stop at that section anymore, I just go straight to the bins. People can be so rude and nasty, donating stuff isn't worth the hassle.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 21/03/2024 16:57

You sold all 3 in 20 mins - well done !
Hopefully everyone turns up, and take the items upon inspection.

Agree but no need for them to be rude and call OP a liar
