to get really grumpy when I'm hungry?

I'm 32 weeks PG and ALWAYS hungry... but I've noticed in the last few days that I def get more frustrated / grumpy when I'm hungry.... the minute I eat (In fact, as soon as I've got the food in the oven) I feel better... I'm pretty much eating constantly (though sticking to 'good' food like fruit) and drinking loads of water....

Maybe I should just give in and start eating chocolate and crips and icecream??

Is it possible to have food hormones?

I'm foul when I'm hungry.

Always have been.

avenanap · 27/03/2008 16:44

I get really tearful when I'm hungry. I'm not PG, I was training as a peads nurse though and sometimes didn't get breaks. I often felt like crying. Weird!

hecate · 27/03/2008 16:45

low blood sugar?

JingleyJen · 27/03/2008 16:45

not food hormones but you blood sugar level can be sapped by baby so it really is to do with hormones and pregnancy (probably)

kitbit · 27/03/2008 16:45

was going to say that is normal then saw that you are pg as well, so DOUBLE normal! I'm grumpy when hungry as well. Low on reserves of any kind makes me narky. Go and break open the Haagen Daz!

NotQuiteCockney · 27/03/2008 16:45

If you try to stick to high-GI snacks, and make sure you have stuff around that you can eat right away, that might help?

Fullmoonfiend · 27/03/2008 16:47

low blood sugar levels can do this. I suffer from hypoglycemia and often get vague, irritable, shaky etc if I don't eat regularly.

eat small meals and snacks about every 3 hours
eat a variety of foods, including meat, poultry, fish, or nonmeat sources of protein; starchy foods such as whole-grain bread, rice, and potatoes; fruits; vegetables; and dairy products
choose high-fiber foods
avoid or limit foods high in sugar, especially on an empty stomach

Mercy · 27/03/2008 16:49

Are you eating enough of the right (ie, filling) things?

Tbh, I don't think it matters what you eat as long as it's not on the list of no-nos and reasonably balanced. With dd I ate masses of chocolate and with ds I had an obsession with egg and bacon!

DH is like this too but obv not pregnant

Drives me potty as he can't see himself getting grumpy- if he's really snappy and I say "are you hungry?" even in a non patronising way he denies it! But one round of toast later and he's grinning and saying "sorry can't believe how shitty I got over a piece of toast!"

If you're pg though this is DEF not unreasonable- and I shall print this thread and show it to dh (minus my message of course ) in about 6 weeks time as I am 25 weeks pregnant myself!

FrayedKnot · 27/03/2008 16:52

I get this...or got this, until I started eating a healthier diet and cut out coffee, and white bread

Good ways to avoid it are eating things with oats in...porridge, oatcakes or oat biscuits.

Also eating plenty of fruit & veg and small portions of protein at regular intervals.

I wouldn't really recommend having chocolate, it will just makes things 10 times worse

I am still pretty foul in the half an hour before teatime

Youcannotbeserious · 27/03/2008 16:54

Mercy - i think you are right... I am eating loads but it's the SORT of food...

Right now, I have a baked potato, beans and 4 (yes 4) sausages cooking... (I promise I'll save some for the dog! )

I have a craving for carbs, I suppose....

I get like this.

Try eating regularly, small meals and avoid sugar unless it's right after something healthy.

milkmoustache · 27/03/2008 18:35

If you really need something sweet, raisins and dates are good - difficult to overdo it on them and even if you do, great for avoiding dreaded constipation!

Hah- sorry, but wait until you start breastfeeding!

Never been so hungry in my life!

ImPinkThereforeImSpam · 27/03/2008 20:03

My DH usually knows I'm hungry before it registers with me! I wonder how...?

vole3 · 28/03/2008 07:28

DH calls me his Gremlin - feed me before midnight and don't get me wet, as low blood sugar makes me grouchy too.
