"i hope when i next get pregnant i have another girl as i dont like boys" infront of my 4yr old DS. When i was putting my DS to bed he said "mummy do you like girls too". I felt really upset for him as he must have been thinking about this all day.

She does seem to think that she is so lucky to have had a little girl, even to the point of asking another friend if she was dissapointed when she had her second son

I have a DS and a DD and love them because they are my children and feel lucky to have 2 happy, healthy children regardless of which sex they are.

AIBU to want to steer clear of this so called friend in the future.

I could never imagine myself having a boy before ds was born. My partner is a woman, most of my friends are women and I was secretly hoping for a girl. Oh my gosh...boys are just the best. I love having a little man too, he is just scrumptious. I would love another.

I like that earshit! I may use it to describe some of the rubbish I encounter in life.

OP - what tactless thing to say, and not the action of a friend.

handlemecarefully · 27/03/2008 21:21

Just to add - I have one of each. I truly love them the same - it is indistinguishable...but it is for different reasons. Dd is very sensitive, empathetic and insightful. Ds is utterly mad, a comedian and very tactile. Can't understand a gender preference.

SmugColditz · 27/03/2008 21:23

When ds1 asks me about odd things adults say and do, I tell him very honestly that some people are rude, and some people are stupid, and sadly some people are both. We should be sad for them because they were never taught good manners.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 27/03/2008 21:24

One of my friends used to say unpleasant things about boys too. She was happy to have a gril because "you know I'm a feminist" (what has that got to do with anything?). She's just had her second DD, probably just as well then.

handlemecarefully · 27/03/2008 21:27

Me too Colditz - Amen to that

kittywise · 27/03/2008 21:27

Earshit is fab, I can quite imagine myself saying " What a load of old earshit'

HonoriaGlossop · 27/03/2008 21:30

colditz, along those lines - we have said to DS that just because people are grown up, does not mean they are clever

hmc I think the gender preference is more to do with people's expectations...they think a girl will be more of a friend to them, someone to go shopping with, they think they will generally be closer to a girl and also there's the pink and sparkly bit that alot of women want to give free rein to!

I think it's a shame and I wish everyone was like you and simply enjoyed their children for what they ARE

handlemecarefully · 27/03/2008 21:35

Awww shucks Honoria!

pinkyp · 27/03/2008 21:47

sounds like she wants a boy but is gutted, either that or is just plain awful!

chipmonkey · 27/03/2008 22:17

I'm expecting my 4th boy and tbh, I would have been happier if I'd been told he was a girl as I do hanker after a daughter! But I would never say it in front of my boys or any other boys for that matter, particularly as most of my reasons for wanting a girl are silly, shallow ones for which I should be ashamed!
Ds1 told me that his friend had asked me if I wanted a girl after having 3 boys and I just said I didn't care as long as the baby was healthy. My sons are fab and I would hate for them to think they were second best. SIL goes on about how lucky she is to have her two boys and two girls but I think she only does it to wind me up!

Janos · 27/03/2008 22:27

Oh FFS any healthy baby is a 'gift', surely? People do come out with some appallingly stupid statements!

chipmonkey · 27/03/2008 23:01

Yes, actually, very shocked at a MW coming out with that one!
