Tingling in urethra after a UTI has resolved....?

Posting here for traffic - sorry!!!

I've been having a nightmare over the past few months with a UTI which just wouldn't shift. Was eventually prescribed antibiotics for an extended period and it seemed to improve, but for the past few weeks I still get this tingling feeling in my urethra/general area down there after peeing. Urinating itself is usually fine, though maybe feels slightly more stingy than usual? Not even a sting, just a weird tingly feeling.

I do have a urogyane appointment next week but in the meantime wondered if anyone also had a leftover tingly/inflamed feeling in their urethra even when a UTI had resolved. It's miserable and starting to think it'll never go :(

For context I'm 32, so don't think it can be menopause related. Also cleared of STDs, smear test normal etc.

I have this and got diagnosed with urethral syndrome .
I think it is inflammation caused by the infection.
let us know if the whiskey works!

I had this after a terrible UTI and mountain of nitrofurantoin.

it did go away but took some time.

Just had my urogynaecology appointment. He took another urine test to culture (results back in a week so that's pretty long...?) and did an examination and swab and said most likely just residual inflammation from the infection and it'll go in time. But he said to keep taking the antibiotics I was prescribed for a few months, as well as hiprex.

Thanks for reporting back and good to know its nothing serious. What is hiprex?

duckcalledbill · 21/03/2024 18:02

I think it’s an antiseptic for the bladder.

it will clean you out

dahliaaa · 21/03/2024 20:01

@pickledwillies is it a full dose antibiotic you are taking long term or a lower dose. I've been reading about hiprex - it looks like some people find it really helpful.

Did your doctor suggest any treatment?

I saw a urologist and got prescribed an anti histamine and topical ovestin cream.
I had a urethral dilation during my cystocopy and I think it was that which helped my symptoms the most (although was v painful for a few days afterwards)

raffegiraffe · 21/03/2024 21:21

Yes. I get this regularly after an awful UTI in 2015
What helps me is staying very hydrated and vagisil itching cream as it is numbing when it starts up, and 2 ibuprofen and a heat pack.I test my urine a lot too to catch any UTI and I use d mannose if it looks like an infection
I think it's inflammation.
It's worse the week before my period so think decreasing oestrogen might make it occur more
I'm glad you have posted about it as never heard anyone else describe it

raffegiraffe · 21/03/2024 21:23

Actually the first time I ever had it (in 2015,after UTI) it got much better immediately after my cystoscopy which I think helped stretch my urethra

pickledwillies · 25/03/2024 09:10

Update: I was feeling a lot better for a few days but the weird tingly feeling post-pee came back yesterday 😓Not sure what to even do now as I'm already on antibiotics!

Only just started the hiprex. It seems to burn a bit after I urinate and lasts a while. Is this normal?

pickledwillies · 25/03/2024 11:54

@raffegiraffe Are you mostly ok these days though?

@Sunnysideup999 Did the symptoms resolve for you?

OP posts:
raffegiraffe · 27/03/2024 18:29

Yes I am. Worse is the few days before period. Think it's low oestrogen. As long as I don't let my wee get concentrated I am ok. And vagisil cream is amazing when it first starts and microwave wheat packs. It's annoying but I think I've got a system.
Next option I will try is vaginal oestrogen and I'm a bit perimenopause anyway

pickledwillies · 29/03/2024 13:45

@Springtime43 did you try the whiskey thing? Did it work?!

I’m still trying cranberry tablets, but once I’ve finished the packet I will try the whisky if symptoms persist. A previous poster mentioned staying hydrated and this seems to be helping. But I will report back!

Springtime43 · 02/04/2024 12:25

Cranberry capsules didn’t seem to make much difference, so I tried one of the earlier suggestions, and took an antihistamine last night (my bladder definitely felt irritated so I can see the sense in the suggestion) and things feel a lot better today. I am cautiously optimistic about this. But there’s always whisky to try!

pickledwillies · 02/04/2024 12:26

@Springtime43 Glad it helped! Which antihistamine?

Boots One A Day - cetirizine hydrochloride

StunnedCrab · 30/11/2024 07:51

@pickledwillies Did this resolve for you? I am experiencing same symtoms after a UTI a month ago. Had 6 days of antibiotics and tingling since. Very, very annoying. I am 40 so thought perhaps estrogen lowering but think GP may think I'm ridiculous if I ask for vaginal estrogen cream if this can be normal after a UTI? I am taking D mannose, cysticlean and just starting taking a daily anti histamine but I don't feel normal!

CarpetSlipper · 30/11/2024 07:58

Could it be thrush? I get this after a UTI due to the antibiotics and don’t really get any symptoms other than a burny feeling.

StunnedCrab · 30/11/2024 11:45

Thanks @CarpetSlipper I did think that so took a tablet and used a pessary last week but it hasn't gone, annoying.
