Job application submission date extended. What does this mean?

I've applied for a job internally. They've extended the closing date by a day. Worrying someone else internal has approached them and asked if they can extend do they can apply. Seems odd extending it by just one day. I know, hoe long is a piece or strung but... any ideas?

It means they (for whatever reason) need to give people/ a person longer to apply.
It could be as simple as the person shortlisting candidates is on holiday so they've decided to extend it by a day to give more people a chance to apply, or they don't have enough suitable applicants yet. Could be anything - don't overthink it.

I would jump to the same conclusion. Have you been told the job is yours and this is a formality?

No I haven't been told it is mine. It is in a totally different department that I've never worked in. I'm fairly certain I won't get it but I've always felt like that and usually do well at interview, so a glimmer of hope!

Is it civil service?

You could be bold and ask the hiring manager/HR why its been extended.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 20/03/2024 12:16

It could be any one of a number of reasons:

  • person recruiting the role needs more time
  • error in the deadline date
  • not happy with number/quality of applications
  • a restructure elsewhere in the company so having to allow for people involved in that to apply

I think you're over thinking this. One day extension could be for any number of issues - system went down so people couldn't submit, holidays, logistics etc. even if it is to allow someone specific to apply it doesn't mean they aren't going to follow due process in appointment - more likely it is to cut off a future grievance about lack of opportunity.

I wouldn’t! It’s really annoying from the outset, you become a pest- sorry that’s how I would view it. Pushy.

It’s one day, don’t overthink it. Could be someone covered under DDA who needs
more time. Don’t overthink.

Tulip32 · 20/03/2024 15:15

Honestly I think this is a non issue.

KreedKafer · 20/03/2024 15:48

My guess is that it's a reasonable adjustment for another applicant who had a valid reason for not being able to complete the application in time. But it could just as easily be that they actually put the wrong date on the original job ad, or that they haven't had enough applicants for a robust recruitment process. I wouldn't overthink this and I wouldn't ask why they've done it.
