Should I send DD in ?

Yesterday morning, DD4 had an ever so slightly red eye. Just a tiny bit in the corner, barely noticeable.

When I picked her up, her eye was gunky and red.

I started putting drops in straight away. She's woken today and it's pretty swollen and very red.

I've continued to put the drops in.

I don't really want to send her to school with it.

She's otherwise well and the school have said she can go.

I'm not sure if I'm being OTT.

It's just very red.

Should I take her to the GP ? Usually my kids get gunky eyes when they have colds but they resolve quickly and aren't as red.

Other times it tends to clear up very quickly after a couple of rounds or drops.

What would you do ?

What drops?

I'd be taking her to see if she needs antibiotics so she doesn't loose any sight

They're antibiotic drops. The ones from the pharmacy.

I'd be keeping her off school and taking her to see a pharmacist to make sure she doesn't need additional treatment. Eyes aren't to be messed with.

Pippa12 · 20/03/2024 06:39

What did the pharmacist say when you took her for the drops?

I didn't take her. I had the drops at home, unopened.

Reading your post back, did you already have the drops in? I think they expire quickly once open so may be ineffective.

Id take her the the pharmacist.

They were unopened and not expired.

No, I wouldn’t send her in today. Too easy for them to spread it round at that age.

Tumbleweed101 · 20/03/2024 06:41

I’d keep her off if she’s struggling with it. If it doesn’t get better today check with a dr too.

Where I work we have had a little bit of an outbreak with bacterial conjunctivitis that is running alongside a viral thing giving them temperatures too so quite a few children have been fairly poorly.

Pippa12 · 20/03/2024 06:43

Cross post- sorry.

Id take her for peace of mind. Could be conjunctivitis could be occular cellulitis… who knows? Best to get checked, I never mess with eyes, too precious.

My children’s nursery/school are fastidious about eye infections, she may get sent home anyway?

Tumbleweed101 · 20/03/2024 06:43

If you haven’t checked with a pharmacist or doctor about this specificily I’d do so.

Immemorialelms · 20/03/2024 06:43

If you can keep her home, I would. It'll stop her rubbing it with dirty hands, and will be a kindness to the class as she won't spread it. The drops should start to work by tomorrow, if not then definitely straight to GP/eye hospital.

SallyWD · 20/03/2024 06:46

Can you get antibiotic drops from the pharmacist? I thought you needed a prescription? I've always needed one. I'd take her to the pharmacist to be sure.

Mindymomo · 20/03/2024 06:48

When my DC have had eye infections, the antibiotic eye drops had to be put in 4 times a day, school wouldn’t do it, so they would have to stay off school. You can’t mess around with eyes.

Strangely you don't need a prescription for them.

That's a good point.

I'll definitely keep her home.

Ah I'd still see the pharmacist

lifebeginsaftercoffee · 20/03/2024 07:17

You don't know whether the drops you've given her are appropriate for the infection she has - she needs to get checked by a professional.
