To go to a concert alone?

SnarkMode · 19/03/2024 21:51

Has anyone done this and really enjoyed it? Regretted it?

It's a big show, not a small intimate gig. I normally enjoy my own company well enough but a bit worried it'll feel a bit flat not having someone to share the excitement with.

Generally speaking I'm not very sociable (no friends that I see outside of work) and no family who are enthusiastic about going.

Tickets are expensive - I could cover the cost of 2 mid-range seats and hope to find someone to go with me before the concert comes around or go it alone and get a really good seat just for me.

What do you think?

I haven’t done it myself but if it’s someone I really wanted to see i probably would. I’m in a fan Facebook group for a band I love and there’s usually always people on there around tour time that put a post on asking if there’s anyone else on their own that would like to go together-could be worth a shot?

SkaneTos · 19/03/2024 23:44

I have. It was great!
It was a singer that no one of my friends/family members were interested in hearing.
I could only afford to buy a ticket for myself. So I did.
Even if I was there "on my own" I felt a lot of energy from everyone around me, and from the musicians, of course.

BobbyBiscuits · 19/03/2024 23:54

I think it'll be great. If you do want reassurance could you chat to other fans online who are going and you could see if there's a a meetup, or just knowing there's people there you chat to would make you feel less alone? I think in the case of this artist the vibe will be very positive and won't be rowdy or anything.

I saw fleetwood mac & Stevie 10yrs ago, and I went on my own as my partner stayed in the hotel with our 8 month old baby.

I felt a little self conscious if I remember, and the people who were sat next to me were surprised I was on my own but I enjoyed it (I think)

I saw that she was touring and tickets go on sale this week. I'd love to see her again and am tempted to get a ticket 😬

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/03/2024 00:22

Why on earth wouldn't you? I've been to see my favourite band and singer (at his solo gigs) plenty of times recently, and I've been to lots of other gigs on my own in the past, ever since I was thirteen. I wouldn't think twice about it.

I've travelled to gigs all over the country recently, some with my husband, who doesn't go to the gigs with me, but we spend the weekend in a hotel for a break. Others I travel alone, going by bus as I don't drive, and enjoy a hotel room to myself.

Sometimes I will meet up with other fans that I've come to know through going to the gigs, but other times I'm alone throughout. It doesn't bother me - I'm there to enjoy the live music, not socialise. Obviously I'll chat before the performance begins, or while waiting to go into the venue, but once it starts it's just about the music.

I can't say I've enjoyed a gig any less for being alone than with other people. I've always been a front row fiend - I'm 5 foot nowt so can't see much otherwise, plus I hate being stuck among a load of people surrounding me - it makes me feel panicky and agitated. That, and I walk with a stick, my leg gets tired so I find it helps to have the barrier to lean on towards the end of the evening. I hate being seated though, it's so boring; I like to be front row stalls, the best view. Then I can just look forward to the stage, and concentrate on the band or singer. I never* *talk during a performance, and would give the evils to anyone who tried to.

I'd get a standing ticket and just go into the crowd. No one will bat an eyelid.

I don't think there are standing tickets - though it's hard to tell until tickets go on sale but I'm fine with seated or standing.

Again - not fussed about blending in or whether others will "bat an eyelid", just wanted to see if the excitement was dulled a bit by being there alone as opposed to having someone to share the hype with.

Not sure there was any need for the ‘snark’ when I was just making a suggestion on how you could perhaps enjoy it a bit more in a crowd to share the ‘hype’.

MassageForLife · 20/03/2024 06:11

Going to ac good solo is great! If it's standing, you can please yourself if you want to be right at the front or away from the main crowd. You can dance like nobody is watching, because even if they are, so freaking what?

Do it!

Spectre8 · 20/03/2024 06:18

If you want to share the excitement look for any forums dedicated to them, on reddit, meet ups etc. You can at least post your excitement online and sometimes there are groups that meet up and u can join for pre drinks if they organise it

Lincslady53 · 20/03/2024 06:21

Go. Chat to the people next to you. The best but is you csn decide what you think of the concert without your friends opinions. I went to see Dylan 20 years ago wuth a group of friends. Dylan does not do a greatest hits show, but reinterprets some of his songs, changing many aspects, even some of the lyrics and melodies, and adds some of his lesser known and newer songs. Everyone else with me hated it, and spent the journey home moaning about it. In fact. They stll moan about it 20 years later. Tge next time I went to see him. I checked recent set lists, familiarised myself with all the songs, and went on my own. Absolutely loved it. Have now beem every time he has been to the UK, always on my own, and loved every gig. So go and do it. You will have a great time.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 20/03/2024 06:26

Look for groups in your area.
I'm in NI and we have a group on FB full of women who don't have a lot of friends to do things with. A group of them have just planned a holiday to Majorca for June and concerts and things come up regularly.
Not that there's anything wrong with going alone, but if you did want company, this might be an option.

Canyoudigityesyoucan · 20/03/2024 06:33

Yes! Went to Harry Styles this summer alone in a seated ticket. Cheap as for a really good view because nobody wants single tickets! Would do it again for sure.

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 20/03/2024 06:37

I’ve been to gigs on my own all my life when nobody shared my interest. Much better than going with someone who doesn’t share your passion.

I wasn't being snarky, I was just saying that I'm not self-conscious about going alone, the reason I posted was to find out if it's a bit of a buzz kill or not.

Sorry if I came accross as rude - I do see how standing would maybe seem a bit more exciting than sitting by yourself.

I went to see one of my all time favs a few weeks back, took my oh who enjoys the music but isn’t a massive fan like me.
it was a great gig. I had a fab time, he sat down the whole time with his coat on and didn’t really engage.
it sort of spoilt it a bit for me.
id have rather gone on my own in hindsight.

SnarkMode · 20/03/2024 09:43

Thanks all!

I've decided to go alone. I think I'd feel more awkward letting go and enjoying myself if I felt like the other person wasn't that interested, and it's alot of money to spend on a ticket for someone who isn't really bothered.

I would definitely stand! It's way less obvious that way who is alone and who isn't. Also sitting sucks.

SnarkMode · 20/03/2024 12:45

No standing tickets - all seated but I'm right in one of the front sections in the middle with an incredible view which would not have been possible if I had to add the cost of an extra ticket on!

Thank you everyone, roll on July!

Go for it! I understand where you are coming from in wanting to have someone to share the excitement but once you are there and the music starts you'll not notice you are alone.
I've been to gigs where the people I was with weren't as into it as me and I would of been just as happy on my own.

UnctuousUnicorns · 20/03/2024 13:22

Yay, sounds great! I prefer standing too when possible, but needs must. Lone or with pals, you're all there for the same reason. Have a fab night! 🙂

FarmGirl78 · 20/03/2024 13:36

I was single for about 15 years and went to many concerts, gigs and comedy shows by myself. I would usually feel slightly sorry myself but always had a really good time regardless. Would dance, sing and chat to randoms next to me. Far better to go than not go was my view.

And then one time a gig came up for Rick Astley, first tour in 20odd years, and a friend I used to live near loved him as much as I did. So I travelled back down, we met for food and went off to the gig. And I HATED having her with me. I was far too bothered about whether she was having a good time to enjoy it myself. I'm now in a relationship, and we've been to comedy nights and I hate that too.....I can't enjoy myself for fear (daft I know!) that they don't think comedian is funny, or are offended by any jokes, are comfy in their seat, want a drink, etc. I know, I know, it's stupid of me and I should just let myself relax, but I can't.

So in summary, I'd much MUCH rather go alone and just be able to enjoy it for myself.

whattodo87 · 20/03/2024 14:44

@SnarkMode ... oh well done !

I tried with priority from Co-op but all sold out !
Where are you seeing her ?

KreedKafer · 20/03/2024 14:47

I'd go on my own, especially as it's a big seated gig.

I honestly can't remember if I've ever been to a concert on my own, but I've been to the theatre on my own plenty of times and I love it! I've definitely never regretted it.

Just seen this update - YAY! Have a brilliant time and give our regards to the legendary Stevie!
