Is an hour walking commute too much?

crochetmonkey74 · 19/03/2024 07:20

I've moved a bit further away from work but am missing walking there. My old walk was 20mins , New walk would be an hour each way. Is this a terrible idea?
On the way home, I would have the option of getting the bus after 20 minutes of the walk but the morning one wouldn't have this option. Anyone got an hour long walk to and from work? How do you find it?

Sounds fine to me, presumably you can decide each day if you're already doing it and not walking?

If you were dragging kids in the rain for an hour that would be another thing but if it's just you then it's a bit like free gym membership.

sorrynotathome · 19/03/2024 07:21

I used to do this when I was in my 20s but I did have the option of a bus if the weather was horrible. I wouldn't consider it now but I'm old.

Hoglet70 · 19/03/2024 07:21

I used to do about 45 minutes years ago. Lovely on a nice summers day, not so good on a wet, cold February morning.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 19/03/2024 07:21

Depends on how fit you are and how many hours you're working, I wouldn't fancy an hour walk before or after work.

Bike?

Taylormiffed · 19/03/2024 07:22

I think it's fine as long as it's a safe route. Mine is 40 mins through a town centre. There's no harm in trying though the summer months.

ArghhWhatNext · 19/03/2024 07:23

Mine would be this if I walked. I do the walk sometimes in summer and it’s lovely.
in winter it’s horrible as it’s along an A road in the dark and this year has been very rainy almost every day.
think about the worst conditions before you commit!

mondaytosunday · 19/03/2024 07:24

Yes I used to walk about this, but not every single day (rain, running late, just not feeling it, darkness in winter). There was a bus which ran the same route so I always had that option.

171513mum · 19/03/2024 07:25

Depends how much you like walking really 🤪
Personally I hate it and would rather cycle in this scenario.

VestibuleVirgin · 19/03/2024 07:25

I would love it, just have clothes for all eventualities! The bus option on the way home is a handy fall-back if weather if foul or you're laden with bags
There will be lots of angsty (not allowed to use hysterical on MN) posts telling you that you'll be attacked/murdered as soon as you step out the door, but no doubt you've scoped the area, looked at the crime stats, lighting, etc, and have come to a sensible decision.
Enjoy the exercise and the world of your walk!

namechanged0 · 19/03/2024 07:25

I wouldn't want to do it without the option to drive or catch the bus on days where the weather was awful or I was really tired.

GrazingSheep · 19/03/2024 07:25

What distance is it?

ElfAndSafetyBored · 19/03/2024 07:26

I walk 15 mins to station and then 30 mins the other end, so not as long but still lengthy. I find it wakes me up and is a great start to my day. I also like being in control. I swear if I get a bus for the last section it often takes longer.

I think it depends how fit you are but also it will be unpleasant on really hot days, especially if you are carrying a laptop or something heavy, or in rain. If work has showers then you could walk and get ready there though.

I’d definitely try it though. Great way to fit exercise into your daily routine.

Unabletomitigate · 19/03/2024 07:27

I used to commute like this for a number of jobs, walking 30-45mins between locations, and to and from home. I enjoyed it but you have to think about the weather. I always had the choice of public transport, but didn't take it because of cost.
Plan for the weather, and it should be fine! Would a bike be an option, it makes things much quicker.

TidyDancer · 19/03/2024 07:27

I do this walking commute and I'm not remotely fit. It's not fun in the shitty weather but I mostly enjoy it.

MumChp · 19/03/2024 07:28

Buy a bike.

NoWordForFluffy · 19/03/2024 07:29

I'd do it, but I'm a big fan of walking to as many places as possible.

I walk for 30 minutes to the station on my one day in the office and I quite like it.

Picklestop · 19/03/2024 07:30

The walk home would be ok, but I wouldn’t fancy it in the morning.

Anameisaname · 19/03/2024 07:30

My bf does this daily. Not because he has no options but because it's his form of exercise.
Tips from him ... invest in an excellent breathable and long raincoat and a good quality backpack. You definitely need to be able to cope with all weathers. He really loves it though, walks quickly and will have a spare t-shirt in his backpack for arrival as he gets very sweaty. You may not!

CherieBabySpliffUp · 19/03/2024 07:31

I would invest in some quality waterproofs. I wouldn't want to risk getting to work looking like a drowned rat.

User135644 · 19/03/2024 07:32

Similar situation. My walk is about 25 minutes at the moment but i'm moving a bit further away which would be a 3 mile walk.

I expect i'll walk it most days and will just get an uber if it's lashing it down. I've walked every day i've lived in my current place.

Loubelle70 · 19/03/2024 07:33

When younger i had to walk to work there and back, about hour each way, yes its fine if weathers nice, but awful when weathers horrible. I hated it.
Have you thought of getting a push bike

This is my main reason for doing it. Daily embedded exercise

People are prepared to commute in a car or train for a couple of hours each way so I don't think the time is a problem. As PP have said, I'd invest in some really good wet weather gear.

Picklestop · 19/03/2024 07:30

The walk home would be ok, but I wouldn’t fancy it in the morning.

I'm the opposite, I could easily do the morning, it's the after work bit that makes me feel ugh

Electric bike is the way forward, it's how I commute (a legal one thats pedal assist only, capped at 15 mph, on flat DH keeps up with me on normal push bike).
