Just had our Sainsbury’s delivery rearranged from Saturday when the systems were down so no deliveries were taking place. I got a £10 voucher for my inconvenience but the delivery driver who just came said that he was due to work but was told on the day that he wasn’t needed and had to take a days holiday instead.

AIBU to think this in unacceptable? My system/internet was down the other day at work so we all went home, I still got paid!

Should read ‘when the IT system was down’

I agree, that's awful. I wonder if it depends on the store. I'll see if my driver mentions it this Saturday.

LightSwerve · 18/03/2024 09:11

That's awful, but presumably allowable legally.

We need much better workers' rights!

IncompleteSenten · 18/03/2024 09:11

Did he mean an annual leave day (which are paid) or did he say unpaid holiday?
Awful if their workforce was not paid. Surely thats not allowed? I suppose if they're on zero hours contracts it would be but still shit.

Bloody supermarkets have too much power nowadays. They pay their suppliers peanuts, and now they’re exploiting their own staff like this.

Hoppinggreen · 18/03/2024 09:14

I hope they arent doing this, even if its a paid holiday it means they lose a days holiday they might want to take another time (unless its an extra)

Mausbajiiw · 18/03/2024 09:37

They were meant to stay and support in store or choose to take holiday

Hannahthepink · 18/03/2024 10:53

This wouldn't surprise me at all. It would have been paid holiday (but basically forced).
I worked for Sainsbury's pretty recently and was sent home often because there was no more work to do or there were too many staff, and it came off our holiday allowance. You could refuse and stay to finish your shift, but it was really looked down upon as making a fuss.

They sent crawling emails to their customers to apologise, but they treat their staff like rubbish.

I actually had three emails of apology from them (all the same). I've never had a Sainsbury's delivery, think I must be on their database via Argos or Tu clothing deliveries.

I had three as well!

Depends if they are on a casual contract or not. I could see if they were the worker presenting that as an unpaid holiday.
