Looking for football results on phone is not 'low class'

Me and hubby and our ds were out shopping. Me and ds love football and were keen to keep track on football scores. Hubby was busy in a shop buying items for himself. Ds asked me to check the football scores so I got my phone out to check and husband said put it away its embarrasing as it's so lower class to do this!! AIBU to think that this is not, he says I'm teaching our ds that it's OK to have electronics constantly! All I did was check the footie score!

Low "class"?

OK.. Here's Princesses Eugiene and Beatrice, The Princess of Wales, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, and even Queen Elizabeth 2nd, all checking their phones in public.

It's rude in some situations, but no. Its not low class.

Sophie has the same phone cover as me 😁.

How? Particularly if you are focussing on looking something up…

But you are in a clothes shop. You are doing something already. So you change to doing something else. This is generally a sign of boredom.
Doesn't matter what you are doing on your phone. Nobody else's business but that's how it looks.

supersonicginandtonic · 17/03/2024 21:26

@kitsuneghost to be fair I find clothes shopping the most boring thing ever. You don't know if people are checking their phone for something important so I don't get how you can judge

ASmokeyEyeAndARedLip · 17/03/2024 21:30

I drove home from dropping DP at his hgv…. I had the football commentary on in the car - shall I get in the stocks on the village green now?
Also, don’t tell anyone, but I watched the end of the game when I got home
…. with the curtains open!! 😱😱
Seriously, OP, your DH needs to lighten up - it’s been a big weekend of football for those of us that follow it, with some really good games…. So checking in with the scores is an obvious thing to do.
Is he normally this prissy?
Next time there’s a good weekend of games, come round to ours, we’ve got beer, popcorn, crisps…. We try and enjoy ourselves, you’re most welcome!

Of course, only checking rugby and polo scores is allowed if you don’t want to look like a commoner.

WildCherryBlossom · 17/03/2024 21:36

Haha! Trick question OP?! It's not the phone, or even the football... it's "me and hubby"?

Thank you!!
Don't get me started on the curtains. It's glorious sunshine outside and we have to have curtains shut and the big light on so no one can see in!! But that's another story...

It's not necessarily a sign of boredom at all. It's often a sign of necessity and societal pressures.

My own reason for checking or using my phone in public is 99% of the time for work. I own my own business and there is a LOT of local competition. If a customer rings or emails me I am going to answer right there and then if I possibly can because if I do not, they are not going to bother to wait for me or ring me back, they are quite simply forgetting I exist and going onto the next person, who also has their phone in their pocket and will answer and boom I've lost potentially a couple of grands worth of income.

That's the reality. Everyone expects everything to happen fast and unfortunately some people are under pressure to keep up.

That's just one example too. Some people have sick relatives in hospital and want constant updates. Some are trying to arrange last minute childcare. Some are keeping in touch with kids they've left home alone.

There's a million reasons other than boredom. And tbh it's 2024. Phone are a big part of life and we need to get over that fact

Is it high class to get your live in nanny to check the polo scores?

😆

I’m often bored clothes shopping. Doesn’t mean I struggle to focus on things that actually matter…

I just ask my lady in waiting to check them for me. OP Voilà problem solved!

I wouldn't say it was 'lower class' but people messing about on their phones in public places makes them look a bit mindless.

Yes, very mindless of me having to pause what I was doing, retreat to a quiet corner of the shop I was in to reply to an urgent email about a sick patient on my day off.
Although I would also do the same to read the live football updates.

So if you run into someone you know in a clothes shop do you just ignore them, because shopping for clothes is already doing something and you can't swap to something else?

You call it a struggle to focus and easily distracted, your way could be called rigid and inflexible

Neither are right or wrong and if the football conversations I have to listen to are anything to do with it its got nothing to do with class. It unites all the men in my team from the private school boys to the council house boys. Drives me mad OP but it's certainly not low class!

RageAgainstTheCoffeeMachine · 17/03/2024 22:39

I would have given him a lower class fuck off answer.
He sounds like a right pretentious cock.

Datgal · 17/03/2024 22:43

Low class? So what? Does that make him more superior because he doesn't stoop so low. Jesus. I don't think I could even be with anyone who even said that sort of shit. What a lovely man

Fizbosshoes · 17/03/2024 22:44

DH checks his phone for football scores regularly (he did it in the interval of a show we went to recently!)
According to the BBC quiz from a few years ago we are middle class.....🤷‍♀️
