Singing and reading simultaneously

DS will swear as he's humming out loud to himself that he's paying full attention to what's he's also reading. Aibu to think he's being an odd child and pop quiz him on th chapter (lightheaded, I won't really pop quiz him. Much).

I think I'm jealous I can't sing and read together!!

Anyone else able or have an equally odd child lol?

Stop calling your child odd. I don't think he's doing anything unusual.

bravotango · 17/03/2024 12:30

Teach him how to read music and stick him in a choir!

I can read and sing at the same time as long as it’s a song I know really, really well. Sang the same song to babies/toddlers at bedtime for years and was able to read things on my phone at the same time! Much less boring! I expect I missed a few verses here and there (or repeated them) but it was using a different part of my brain, clearly.

It is interesting as, in theory, you can’t process two pieces of ‘language’ based information at the same time (e.g. can’t efficiently read and listen to someone talking at the same time).

@KrisAkabusi what word will you permit th OP to use to describe her own child doing something she feels is odd

I can't do it, maybe I'm odd? How do you concentrate on the tune and the words?

That's a good plan, he has as lovely voice and was in choir before the teacher went off sick. I must ask her if it's restarting. I might suggest to DH he tries to get him to read music, I was always a quote the notes on top / learn it by gravity kind of recorder player

That's impressive possum, that's a skill I want to learn for the endless repetitions of twinkle twinkle little star

Exactly, and what's wrong with being odd? It isn't a slur in our house.

That's how I used to study for my national exams when I was 17 (music on, humming along to it). I finished high school (different country) with a 18.55/20 and finished uni (veterinary science) the same way so definitely possible!

KrisAkabusi · 17/03/2024 12:39

Doing something that somebody thinks is odd is not the same as being odd. Being called odd can definitely be considered a slur

KreedKafer · 17/03/2024 12:40

Odd? No. Not even unusual.

Reading music is a brilliant life long skill that is much easier to learn as a child so if he's interested then definitely encourage it! Makes picking up an instrument much easier too if that becomes of interest later on

Eleganz · 17/03/2024 12:47

I presume you are talking about humming a tune unrelated to what he is reading rather than reading words that match the tune? Obviously people all over the world do the latter on a regular basis and even sing the words they read. However the former is possible too just multitasking.

I sometimes hum along to music whilst reading something different - I'm musical so it is just something that sometimes happens while I'm focussed on something else.

if he enjoys humming and singing then please do see if there is a choir for him to join nearby.

Girlontherailreplacementbusservice · 17/03/2024 13:07

I used to be able to read while doing all sorts of things, watching TV, listening to/singing along to music, listening to a conversation other people were having. As I have got older I have become less and less able to do this. If I'm scrolling on my phone I'm not taking in what's happening on TV, if I 'm listening to music while I work and a song I love comes on my focus drops from the work the music.
DS will watch TV while doing something else (reading, playing a board game, gaming on his switch) and can tell me the plot of both things (because I will test him hoping he will trip up and I can gain control of the TV).

Bobbotgegrinch · 17/03/2024 14:22

I can happily do this too OP, looks like you're the odd one.

Forgiveme · 17/03/2024 14:25

When I read aloud to the DC, I often find my thoughts wandering and I can read a whole chapter whilst thinking about something else entirely. However, I haven't taken in a single thing I've read!

Octonaut4Life · 17/03/2024 14:31

Just to test myself I read the thread so far while singing to myself. No issues doing both together here!

Luckycloverz · 17/03/2024 14:38

My internal monologue is pelting out I will survive on repeat whilst reading MN, still forever searching for the off button 🤔

I'm ok that it's me that's odd for thinking it's odd

Yes see internal singing I get, I think it's the being able to make a tune out loud and read in his head that confuses me. Happy to think he's just a genius and I'm the odd one lol

See I think this was more my point, the focusing on it enough to follow the story not just push through the words

Yeah so reading a kids book and humming a nonsense tune out loud at the same time. I'll remind him tomorrow

Iv a friend who reads and listens to audiobook at the same time. They are able to divide focus and take in info from both. Always amazed me as I so can't divide my attention
