Is Wandsworth rough?

Booking a hotel and Wandsworth in London one is 30 quid cheaper than the other. What's the area like?

Famously so

Is Wandsworth rough?
TempleOfBloom · 17/03/2024 09:29

Some of Wandsworth is incredibly posh , some less so.

Where exactly is it?

Access to transport will be one of your most important factors.

Houseplantmad · 17/03/2024 09:41

I live in Wandsworth- which hotel? Premier Inn at Southside?

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 17/03/2024 09:49

I know Wandsworth - you'll be fine, always lots of people around. It's not on the tube but it is well connected on the bus route and from Wandsworth town it's about 15mins into Waterloo.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 17/03/2024 09:50

*that's 15 minutes on the train btw not the bus

InTheRainOnATrain · 17/03/2024 09:59

Where? There’s Wandsworth Wandsworth as in the bit around Southside shopping centre which is not dodgy just traffic choked and a bit dull but it is a quick train to Waterloo. Or there’s the borough of Wandsworth which is quite large and like any borough pretty variable so some bits are lovely some less so.

suki1964 · 17/03/2024 10:09

Lived most of my life there and not a bother. Im guessing its southside you are looking at?

Just no tube line and the wandsworth one way is a traffic nightmare

A bus into Putney - about 10 mins sorts the tube situation, walk to Wandsworth town for the mainline

buzzlightyearsaway · 17/03/2024 10:10

Not at all

It's just not very touristy

buzzlightyearsaway · 17/03/2024 10:11

10 min Bus to Clap Junction and the world's your oyster from there

buzzlightyearsaway · 17/03/2024 10:12

In Love Actually she said she lived in the dodgy end but when Hugh knocked on her door, she lived in a victorian house

Not the dodgy end then

They filmed that scene in Herne Hill apparently, so not even in Wandsworth!! God knows where it was supposed to be.

Nevermind31 · 17/03/2024 10:34

hotel Most likely cheaper because of transport. Tube is very quick and often, if you need to take a train these will be less frequent and you will have to go to a train station (busy and big)…
everywhere in London has posh areas next to dodgy ones….

Ginmonkeyagain · 17/03/2024 10:48

Wandsworth is a whole London borough. Where are you staying? Do you mean Wandsworth Town?

Premier inn on garratt lane

Springisnear4 · 17/03/2024 11:45

I'm going to a party so I'll just get a taxi back, its ten minutes in a taxi to a premier inn

OP posts:
InTheRainOnATrain · 17/03/2024 12:11

Yeah that’s the south side one. It’s fine.

KateLizAn · 17/03/2024 12:15

Like everywhere in London the ‘rough’ bits and ‘not rough’ bits are rubbing up against each other.

There’s areas around Garratt Lane I wouldn’t walk around alone at night (born and bred in Tooting) but you’ll be fine at that Premier Inn. Have fun!

Houseplantmad · 17/03/2024 13:23

@Springisnear4 you'll be fine there. It's above a big Sainsburys and opposite a shopping centre so lots of activity during the day but I'd get an uber/taxi back if late at night. Have fun!

Fine but a long way out
Look at the holiday inn express in Wandsworth town- has a car park but large car park (paid) opposite. 2 mins walk to the station and quick train into central London

Taxi -as in black cab- no chance
Uber- still quite tricky to get at the moment as limited supply vs demand

IvorTheEngineDriver · 17/03/2024 13:42

It was back in the 60s and 70s when I was a boy. Now it's one of the posher parts south of the river.

V good point. I’ve had the best luck recently with the ‘rides’ aka minicabs you can get through the Free Now app but very often there’s nothing and twice this week I’ve ended up coming home on a Lime bike because there wasn’t a direct bus route between where I was going and a 4 wheeled vehicle was impossible to find. If your party is only 10 minutes away, so not central London, I wouldn’t count on just being able to get a cab OP.

ACuriousHare · 17/03/2024 17:27

That bit's fine. Just a bit meh.

Tbh bad things can happen even in the very central or "naice" bits of London. A boy was stabbed in Victoria station some years ago and muggers on mopeds frequently target shoppers outside Harrods. You're probably not the demographic who is most frequently targeted so I wouldn't worry too much.
