To think snorers should be banned from society?

Lighthearted. Ish. On a ferry back from France and a man has been snoring so loudly for the last hour I had to move seats, but I can still hear him!!

AIBU to believe that snorers just don’t give a fuck about anyone else? It is so unbelievably irritating, they must know they do it, but they never seem to care?!

I snore, husband snores even our cat snores.

He might need to get that sleep since he may have a drive to do once you arrive in dock at destination.

Take off your judgey pants and try to have some empathy albeit I appreciate you're cranky - if you don't like it then move.

I tried to get some sleep on the last channel ferry I was on (which for me would've been a catnap at best, I'm not like the DH who could sleep on a clothesline 😂) but I ended up talking a young lass through a panic attack thru a breathing exercise, walking miles to find the loo and buying a glass of wine instead 🤣🤣🤣😝😝😝

Greengagesnfennel · 17/03/2024 10:26

If you wanted to sleep you needed to choose a cabin. Public ferry area could have all sorts of noises, crying baby, people laughing and chatting, people eating. Yabu to expect him to worry about making noise in such a place.

WinterMorn · 17/03/2024 10:43

JackSleepskin · 17/03/2024 01:50

@WinterMorn you are just defensive because I bet you’ve also caused other people to scream inside with it and clearly didn’t care!

You patently don’t appreciate how draining it is when you’re tired and someone is making a noise like a plane taking off from 100 meters away. I didn’t expect to sleep but it would be nice to not have to listen to it for the entire crossing.

You can bet what you want! You are coming across as a very unpleasant individual and really, that’s what should be keeping you up at night.

Hollowgast · 17/03/2024 10:46

No way. I'd miss my wife too much.

MissingMoominMamma · 17/03/2024 10:46

JackSleepskin · 17/03/2024 01:29

@WinterMorn if I knew I did it I wouldn’t choose to lie down across 3 seats and go to sleep. I’d have some respect for the people around me. Not a single other person in the vicinity is asleep, though I’m sure many of them, like me wish they could be.

He might be driving again on this side. Would you rather he drove when tired?

I take earplugs on holiday for this very reason.

LilacMcMiaow · 20/03/2024 16:39

While snoring is involuntary, choosing not to try to manage/stop it is a choice.

It’s not a big deal for someone living alone, but inaction/apathy feels like a selfish choice for anyone who expects to share a bed with someone else.

There are so many things people can try to do to help with this. Some people might have a health condition that can be treated or managed, with benefits to the snorer’s health (e.g an outpatients nasal procedure or a CPAP machine). Or there are many over-the-counter remedies to try, rings, sprays, nasal strips or dilators. Or even simple things so sewing a pocket on the back of their pyjama top (put a small ball or something in the pocket so the snorer can’t sleep on their back).

I have a lot of sympathy and understanding for a snorer who is actively trying to stop snoring and/or is respectfully aware of their surroundings (ie does not sleep in public), I have less patience/sympathy for a snorer who is not.

Boomer55 · 20/03/2024 17:02

My late husband used to snore badly because of breathing problems. They gave him a CPap but that was more noise.

In the end I got some Mack’s silicone ear plugs. Problem sorted.

No-one snores intentionally. 🙄

Brandnewskytohangyourstarsupon · 20/03/2024 17:08

Ooh is this a thing??
can we also remove people who leave dog shit, drop litter, spit and park on pavements from society as these get right on my chebs.

ALSO those twats who play utter utter dog shite music blaring from their phones on public transport and have full on conversations on loud speaker on public transport.. they need to be banned too.
I LOVE this new rule OP.

Simonjt · 20/03/2024 17:10

Public areas of public transport are noisy, if you want quiet you need to either use decent earplugs, or reserve a private cabin. Anyone expecting quiet on the communal area of a ferry has completely unrealistic expectations.

teacrumpetsandcake · 20/03/2024 17:14

If you snore when you fall asleep it's not really within your control. It's not like people are choosing to snore. Sometimes they are aware and feel bad about it but can't help it.

Yes there are often lifestyle changes that can help, but people can't exactly click their fingers and just do that on a ferry can they?

So I'm not really sure what you are expecting people to do about it tbh.

KreedKafer · 20/03/2024 17:22

Oh for god's sake, get the fuck over yourself. You were in a public place. If you want silence, get a cabin or buy some earplugs. And I guarantee you that you probably snore sometimes too - most people do occasionally, especially if they're having to sleep sitting up so their head falls back. The bloke wouldn't have had the faintest idea that he was snoring because - and this isn't rocket science - he was asleep.

For most people, snoring really isn't something they can just manage/stop.

My DP snores. He doesn't snore on planes/trains because he doesn't fall asleep deeply enough but he snores every night in bed. If he goes to bed before I do, I can hear him snoring from downstairs. But he can't help it and there is literally nothing he can do to 'manage' or 'get it treated' so I don't have a go at him about it. Because I'm not, you know, a total arsehole.

Sunshineandpinkclouds · 20/03/2024 17:55

I was working in the library the other day and someone can in fell asleep and started snoring loudly. I had to leave it was so bad.

NotQuiteNorma · 20/03/2024 17:58

They should make them all share a room with eachother so the rest of us can get some sleep.

LoobyDop · 20/03/2024 18:00

You sound awful, OP. Just really unpleasant and judgemental.

Helpisso · 20/03/2024 18:01

I am a snorer and am very self conscious about it. Your post has added to my anxiety about a long haul flight I am taking. Absolutely no choice about the return flight being overnight. !

Tontostitis · 20/03/2024 18:02

No one snores on purpose give your head a wobble

Countrylife2002 · 20/03/2024 18:03

I’d always LTB for snoring.

DinnaeFashYersel · 20/03/2024 18:03

I snore.

I snore in public.

I really don't care.

Buy some earplugs.

JamieJ93 · 20/03/2024 18:04

Wow you sound like a delightful person 😂
I have sleep apnea and I snore l, not to annoy or be disrespectful but because my air ways are collapsing and I cant help it.
Maybe he couldn't bring his CPAP machine or maybe he just doesn't care about horrible people, like yourself.

RobertaFirmino · 20/03/2024 18:04

Snorers are annoying but instead of banishing them, how about making anti-snoring devices affordable for all and ensuring they are able to see a GP about it if nothing OTC works.

Porridgeislife · 20/03/2024 18:05

Tracker1234 · 17/03/2024 01:50

It’s a horrible thing to hear and I think OP is right.

Snorers just don’t care about anyone else.
They are often overweight, refuse to go to GP and almost always are the ones who stay in the main bed with the people listening to their crap on camp beds, on the sofa etc

I’m on the lower end of normal BMI.
I have snored since I was a toddler.
I have had my adenoids removed.
I use nasal steroid spray and a sinus rinse every day.
Further surgery is pointless as I have a congenitally high palate.

What would you propose that I do?

Biffbaff · 20/03/2024 18:40

YABU You should have brought noise cancelling headphones with you.

Nope. DH snores very loudly. He's not overweight, and doesn't drink any alcohol. He's been to the GP and been referred to ENT at the hospital. They've said he has a sinus problem which they can't really fix. Surgery is a possibility but not guaranteed to work, and even if it worked it wouldn't work for very long. He has medication which helps but doesn't eliminate the issue.

There's not really anything else he can do.
