AIBU to think that Mozart's Requiem is having a bit of a moment?

I think this is a good thing btw because I like it so am pleased it's reaching a new audience, but I do see it cropping up all over the shop, on trails and adverts and such. Especially the Lacrimosa. Is this the mood of the times?

It’s a way that classical music can become more mainstream, I’ve recognised for ages that many people don’t like classical music but they do like pieces they’ve heard over and over on adverts etc. Music has to be imprinted in your brain before you can appreciate it fully.

Lacrimosa has been used forever all over the place.

Other requiems are also available.

But I am noticing this piece in particular more frequently. Do you not think so?

Yes @Orbaret I think you’re right.

Eg I've just gone on to YouTube and searched Mozart requiem and the first hit was a performance from 3 years ago with 3.9 million views. A lot of people are listening to this rn.

When I was young there were many occasions when you would hear classical music on the radio..... housewives choice, Down Your Way, Family Favourites among others. Now you have to actively seek it out on Radio3 or ClassicFM.

@eddiemairswife if you feel that you're lacking classical music in your life I would urge you to tune in to radio 3. I get what you're saying, it is a shame that you don't get snippets on radio 2 any more, but really the radio 3 presenters are so lovely, in the main, and they will guide you through your musical discovery journey.

Thanks @Manyandyoucanwalkover . Like I say it's not a bad thing, just something I've noticed.

I do think it's a most wonderful work, like a last glorious gasp. Who knows what he'd have gone on to write had he lived. You look at this and the A minor piano sonata and see where he was going.

For ages it was all about Verdi - especially the Dies Irae. Personally I’m waiting for Berlioz’s turn to be all over everywhere: 5 brass bands & unexpectedly upbeat? That’s my kind of Requiem…
